| Nautical terms
Having spent some time on the briny deep, I am curious about some of the terms. Why is there astern and abaft when they mean the same thing? And there is bow and forward, but not abow or aforward. We always said go forward or go aft or go astern. I think abaft is a very old term. Is there a dictionary or glossary of old or archaic nautical terms? Steve |

| Winter to summer in 2 days.
Last week it was in the 40s, this week it is in the 890s and we just had a thunderstorm. The good news is we got out on the boat 3 times this week. This weekend is supposed to be great Hooray for summer. Bad news is I might have the A/C on soon but at least my pool is heating up enough to get in it. I know you Wisconsin, Minnesota, Canada folks think 70 degree water is "just like the lake" but it is too cold for me. My solars should have the pool up to 80 soon. |

I thought about you guys yesterday as I drove past Percy Priest. Just thought I'd speak up and let you all know that I'm still here too. Read every day (or at least check for new posts every day). Hopefully next time I'm down that way I'll have some time to actually fish. Harry J |

| Acorn Funding Reinstated by Judge...Again
NYC judge: Govt must stop blocking money to ACORN By LARRY NEUMEISTER (AP) 18 hours ago NEW YORK A federal judge who found it unconstitutional that Congress tried to cut funding to the activist group ACORN has rejected a government request to change her mind and has ordered government agencies to make it clear the funding isn't blocked. In a written ruling Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Nina Gershon made permanent her conclusion last year that the cutoff of funding was unconstitutional. She ordered all federal agencies to put the word out about it. The Brooklyn judge said ACORN was punished by Congress without the enactment of administrative processes to decide if money had been handled inappropriately. She said the harm to ACORN's reputation continues because the government never rescinded its advice to withhold funding after it was distributed to "hundreds, if not thousands, of recipients." ACORN, or the Association of Community Organizat [More...] |

| Shimano Turn Around Time
I sent a box of my older Curados off to Shimano a few weeks ago to clean & check per their website, and have heard nothing back. Tracking shows they received it a couple days after I sent it. What is their typical turn around time for cleaning and repairing reels? |

| 23lbs to win and 8+ big fish
Not us though. We had 10lbs 14 ounces for third ... from last... LOL. (ABA's scale was stuck on pounds and ounces) I've been fishing from The Tin Can for the whole winter, and its getting to have some problems. Its always been my backup and occasional trash water adventure boat, but the lower unit came apart on our prefish scouting on Thursday. We had located a number of areas where big fish where moving up and we were excited, but I had to get the lower unit fixed first. It's a pretty simple motor and I have it pretty well figured out so, I was confident in that since I've been buying up spare parts cheap when they come along. I knew I had everything I could need to repair the lower unit, but when I tackled it on Friday it just wouldn't go back together. I was ready to give up when a fishing buddy called me to tell me he had a spare boat we could use. One of our competitors. Real class. Since I was no longer stressing over it I decided to take The Tin Can's [More...] |

| Flint River Club Tournament
Sunday - February 7, 2010 - Day 37 - one day missed Flint River Bass Club First Tournament 2010 - Lake Sinclair, Fished 7 AM - 3 PM Water temp 44 - 55, warm water was around steam plant Air cold and cloudy Started on riprap for an hour without a bite. Water as muddy as I have ever seen - looked like cappuccino. No bites For the boards that pull posts and place them on their sites, visit me at http://fishing.about.com - for those here I apologize for the spam. Fished some areas around the marina with no bites. Lots of boats working the area - two fairly big tournaments - 30 boats each - went out of marina this morning. Worked docks, grass beds, wood cover. Fished jig and pig, crankbait and jig head worm. Nothing Ran down to a rocky bank I like where I hoped the warm water from the steam plant would help. It was no warmer but was a little bit clearer - could see my crankbait down about four inches. Nothing hit around the docks and rocks. As I got ready to leave [More...] |

| The Tin Can Too
Its been resting on the floor of the shop most of the last year. I haven't done anything with it for a while until a few days before the Yuma Pro Am BBQ. It was in the way so I loaded it back on the trailer and moved it so we could get to the tables and chairs. LOL. Seriously I finally did a little more work on it on Sunday. Cut a couple pieces of 3/4 plywood to act as load spreaders in the bow for trailering. I know 3/4 is overkill, but I don't want to have to open this thing up again ever. If you have seen some of my pictures you know the bow of this boat is built heavy since I cut out and rebuilt its pushed in and broken nose. My son and I fitted the pieces, and cut and fitted some backer plates out of aluminum scraps left over from other jobs. Originally Tracker had riveted through to do this, but I went with 1/4" stainless bolts and stainless nylocks on the inside. After we had it all fitted we pulled it apart and painted the ply with epoxy resin to [More...] |

| Fishing OK - Execution, not so much.
Well, I've been fishing ok since the first of the year, but just can't seem to get that big bite and execute on all the bites I get. The Antique Kitten underwent a propulsion transplant operation last year, and the new mill has been having some disagreements with her electronics. Its in the shop and Mercury is busy eating up another month of my warranty while they play silly games instead of fixing it and letting me use my boat. Good thing I still have The Tin Can with her 20 year old Force that everybody told me wouldn't last when I put it on 7 years ago. LOL. Probably just as well we were in The Tin Can. The water was pretty low. The only real disadvantage is she's slow, and our first spot was a bit of a run. With judicious use of a push pole and the trolling motor we managed to skim into our first spot and caught a nice limit of small keepers pretty quick by chunking and winding. On a hunch I tossed a large white spinner bait up and dragged it over a shallo [More...] |

| First 2010 tournament
Sunday - January 24, 2010 - Day 23 - one day missed January 24, 2010 - Spalding County Sportsman Club tournament Jackson Lake, water extremely muddy to heavy stain, 45 to 48 degrees First tournament of the year, fished 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM Rainy, cool, windy weather At blast off I went to my usual rocky point on the main lake to start. Water was very muddy and 48 degrees - kinda deflated my hopes which were low to start with. Fished the area with two different crankbaits and a jig and pig - nothing. For the other boards that pull these reports, please visit my site at http://fishing.about.com That is in my signature line here but it isn't picked up. Hate to spam this board but I hate auto pulls of my posts even more. Ran to Tussahaw Creek at 8:30 - water was a little better but a little cooler. Fished a rocky point and bank, then bridge riprap and pilings. Not a hit. At 9:30 it started raining a little harder and I decided to fish up the bank rather than crank up an [More...] |

| New Melones trip
Went up to New Melones. First time out in ages. Went the kayak route. Trying my buddies Outback. We trolled for trout, and he caught one trout and two small spots on a shad lure. I got one 2# spot with a wacky rigged Senco. Lots of fish marked on the finder, just not a lot of biters. The bass boat guys were doing just about as well. Talked to two guys working a point we had worked with senko and dropshot and they were splitshotting for nada also. Was a balmy 35 when we started in the morning. Got up to the 60's and calm in the afternoon. [More...] |

Hay Bob, it's been a long time since I've had access to the old newsgroup so I was hoping that you could pass on a little information for me. There seems to be a lot of people from the old days of ROFB showing up on Facebook, so I've created a group there called R.O.F.B. hoping that we could hook up there on occasion. Would you please make a post on the newsgroup for me asking that anyone with a Facebook account sign up? It'll be good to get together again with the old guys. | Some Folks Are Allright
When I walked in a few minutes ago there was a big box sitting on my easy chair. I was hoping it might be something I ordered or maybe some tackle from one of the Yuma Pro Am sponsors to give away. I whipped out my knife and cut open the box without even looking at the label. It was full of new children's toys and a letter... ****** Hi Bob, I won't be able to fish the Pro Am this month, but I wanted to contribute to your toy drive anyway. Hopefully I will be back out in January to fish the next one. Merry Christmas Duane Johnson ****** I am touched Duane. | Bass tournament
I went to a committee meeting for the Our Lady of the Lake Children's Miracle Network Bass Tournament. We averaged about 150 boats each year and we are looking to increase this to 200 boats. We also looking to increase of sponsorship. My question to the tournament fisherman is what makes you chose one tournament over another? There are several big tournaments around the same time of the year and we want to do something that my draw fisherman from fishing another tournament over ours. Any ideas to increase sponsorship. We already have Stratus donating a boat and a local marine company donates the trailer and motor. Sarge [More...] |
