Castable Flourocarbon
I was a big fan of Seaguar Carbon Pro for a long time, but I can't see to find it anymore. As my bulk spools of various sizes run out I am forced to try other things. Right now I am running through some Seaguar Invisx. I hate it. Its very unmanageable. Sure it's a lot more abrasion resistant than CarbonPro was, but its not that great otherwise.

So far of a 7 or 8 Flouros I have tried the old Maxima that I didn't like that much compared to Carbon Pro has been the best replacement. I had a sales rep hand me a couple bulk spools of it to try several years ago. I pull a 6.8 out of the cane with it last year on 8lb test, and while its not as manageable as Carbon Pro was its so much easier to manage than Invisx that it makes Invisx feel like casting a steel wire. Still I would like something better.

Moderately abbrasion resistant, sinks like flouro, has low stretch, and good clarity, and is atleast as castable as Carbon Pro. I'm at that point where I am ready to t [More...]

Bass Fishing In November
Went fishing on Monday. Very, very late in the season here (New Hampshire). Wound up catching 3 large mouth, one of them 3.2 lbs. and my buddy got 4. Water temps around 42 degrees. I was actually surprised that we caught ANY. I've never fished so late in the season.

Fantastic end to a fantastic season. We started in March. Set a personal best small mouth at lake Opeechee.

Shoulder Work
I do a form of snap pitch that has become quite accurate for me, but after a day of it working in and around heavy cover my shoulder gets quite sore. There is no noise or pressure in the joint, but several of the older guys I know who do a lot of this type fishing have had shoulder surgeries. I hope to avoid that. My main technique is to fish other methods, but push comes to shove accurately putting a bait back in the trash produces a lot of big fish. Any suggestions on methods to improve my technique to avoid this repetitive motion damage? [More...]

Making Hooks Barbless ?
Hi,

Shame that Mepps apparently does not offer any of their spinners in a barbless style.

Would like to change many of the Aglias I have to barbless.

What's the easiest way ?

Just use a longnose pliers to clamp down and squeeze the barbs, or...?

Thanks, Bob

Anyy way to get a replacement section for broken 2 piece rod?
I have a great Fenwick HMG 6'6" Graphite rod for maybe 13 years and when I get out of my car after a fishing trip and get the rod out of the trun, the second section ( the one with the rod tip ) has been shatterd somehow, and a rod that horsed in many a fish including a huge 9 lb.Walleye in the St. Lawrence River is kaput. Fenwick is not in the business of doing this kind of thing, the fishing stores all say it is hopeless. So It's time to take it to usenet I guess!

Any suggestions?

thanks! [More...]

Pickerel in Pond ?
Hi,

Live outside of Boston.

The relatively small Pond I go to a lot has a list of fish that are, supposedly, in it.

Besides the usual cast of characters, they say there are also Pickeral in it.

Have never seen a Pickerel.

What's are some good lures to try for Pickerel specific ? Size ?

Are they a bottom dwelling fish, or...?

Any hints for ?

Thanks, Bob

Abu Garcia 1600 Black Max Ambassadeur Reel
Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the previous help; much appreciated.

Have a 20+ year old Abu Garcia Black Max 1600 Ambassadeur bait casting reel. Really like it a lot. Fine Product. But, time for someting new.

From their site, it seems that their C3 series is the closest that they now offer. True ? But, from the pix, it does seem a bit "different" from what I have now.

As I will have to order from a catalog without actually seeing one, I am wondering if anyone has one, and might answer the following:

- is the C3 actually the closest now to my old 1600 ? Have they given up the black color ?

- what is the push-lever on the flange for ? my 1600 does not have this.

is it to replace the thumb push-bar on my 1600 that allows the spool to free-spool when depressed on casting ?

- on these new models, like their new C3, does the level wind bail now follow the line during casting (unlike my reel, where it stays stationary on casting) ?

- is there still a kno [More...]

Spinning Reels With A Trigger ?
Hi,

I have had a Shimano Stradic spinning reel for many and many a year. Like it a lot. Smooth, and has been trouble free. But, am always on the lookout for something "better."

I saw some posts about the Shimano ones with the trigger. So, when I was in a sporting goods store I tried to look at them and find out about them, as I have never used one.

Unfortunately, they are all in a plastic, sealed, wrap, so no luck in playing with one.

Let me ask, please:

Do you folks like them better than the conventional, non-trigger type ? Why ? Pros and Cons ? How popular are they; are they taking over from the conventional design now ?

When you press on the trigger getting ready for a cast, does that also open the Bail ?

Do you release the trigger at the final stage of the cast, similar to what one would do with, e.g., the Zebco closed face "button" reels ?

Does the trigger have any function when you are ready to retrieve ? e.g. does turning the h [More...]

Mepps Spinner Blade Colors Question
Hello,

Not a Bass "scholar," but was wondering about this:

I fish a lot in a small Pond outside of Boston. The usual; smallmouth and largemouth, with lots of yellow perch.

I can always get a load of them using a size 0 or 1 Mepps Spinner (treble hook).

Has to be Undressed; the ones with a skirt just don't seem to attract them.

The ones that work always seem to be the ones with a Silver Blade.

The Gold, or the Black bladed ones (Fury, I think) with the spots don't work either. Just the Silver ones.

Mepps, I'm sure, sells millions of the Gold and Black speckled Blade ones,

So,

For you experts:

Under what conditions do, or would, the Gold and Black speckled blades be expected to work "better" than the Silver bladed ones ? Why ?

Thanks, Bob [More...]

Best Year Ever?
I've been fishing ever since I can remember...More than 50 years.

This year has been BY FAR the best year I can ever remember. Set new personal records for Small mouth twice. Caught a Large mouth bigger than I've caught in more than 2 decades. Friday, in the dog days of summer my buddy and I each caught more than 30 bass including my personal best ever Smallie.

Maybe it's global warming, I don't know. But it's been an incredible year so far. If it IS global warming, I want more of it!

CalifBill or Jarod Bollardo
Hi Bill / Jarod, Hey guys.

Don't know if you still read this group or not, but I have a good fishing buddy who is transferring up to to Monterrey. Spent his last three years at MCAS Yuma (when he wasn't deployed to Afganistan), and he is a great guy. Always pitches in for gas, asks what he can bring etc. Anyway the Corps sent him to Monterrey to go to school for the next three years. He's an avid bass angler, but isn't afraid to pick up an ultra light and have some fun whacking redears and bluegill, make long casts to striper boils, or pick up a fly rod and chase some toothy critters. I was hoping you might be able to point him towards the fun clubs, and/or where he can hook up with some other anglers. He's not a pro or pro-team club angler. Just one of those guys who makes a great back seater. You can drop me a line at:

bob (at) yumabassman (dot) com and I'll be glad to give you his contact info.

I know Monterrey is a little ways off from you, but maybe you [More...]

Mepps Spinner Baits & Skirts
Hi,

Just an occasional fisherman, unfortunately, but enjoy it a lot when I can do it.

Just curious about this.

Have always had my best "luck" with Mepps Spinners that also have the feather-like skirt.

Funny, the Mepps have always worked for me, but the few Wordens ones I've tried never had. Sure do look similar, but must be something different about them ?

Anyway, went to a local pond the other day, and couldn't get a bite or nibble on any Mepps with a feather skirt.

Tried one without the skirt, just the bare treble hook, and fish after fish, after fish... Smallmouth and Yellow Perch mainly.

Any thoughts on ? Why ?

All on Me - Good and Bad
I fished Yuma Pro Am Sunday (6/23/12). I didn't draw a co-angler, so it was all on me. I thought I would try to start in the current again. My first spot already had a boat on it, my second didn't produce. My third didn't produce. Off I went into one of the lakes to see if I could find something going on as the sun still hadn't cleared the mountains. I hit three high percentage spots in the lake and nothing.

There was some grass growing up in the lake with a few feet of clear water above so I decided to give a crankbait a try. Still nothing. My crank bait fouled on itself on one cast and started to spin so I burned it back to the boat spiraling through the water right at the surface. I wasn't even looking when I heard the "KA-PLOOSH!" of a topwater strike. I dropped the rod, took up slack, gave it a second, and swept the hook set just like I would on a regular popper strike. Amazingly I hooked up and put my first 2 pound keeper in the boat... on a fo [More...]
