used whaler

A local dealer has a 1986 17' Montauk with a 90 hp motor. They are asking $5500. If the boat checks out, would this be a faiir price? Seems a bit high to me for a boat that old. Any suggestoins on a fair price?

Make certain it weighs what you expect. If the foam core is holding water Whalers can weigh 3 or 4 times their expected dry weight.

Great resource for Whaler info:

Good advice. Some older Whalers are waterlogged and there's no way to tell unless you drill out a core sample or weigh the boat. A local harbormaster boat had this problem (boat wasn't that old, either). Every season it got slower and slower and the engine was incorrectly blamed until they realized it didn't handle like it used to.

If it has a trailer with it, then it's about right for that age.

I would caution you to check a couple of things. One, if the transom looks like it's been breached (as in looks swollen along the top) then I'd stay away from it. Some of those models had problems with the inner liner leaking at the transom joint - it happened to one that I owned and after checking around, it appears to be a common issue with both the Sport and Montauck versions.

Second, take a look at the cable run entry and exit. Check to see for serious stress cracks in the floors - another personal experience. Sometimes the floor will delaminate from the foam which is what happened to the one I had. Pretty easy fix though.

On the other hand, this is a sound boat and besides the occasional blister here and there, should last you for a while.

The usual caveats about the engine: compression test, spark test, cable check, lower unit pressure check - all that should test ok.

Good luck.

Later,

Tom
