A followup to the new boat post
Just saw that Tropical Storm Gamma may be heading our way:
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphics/AT27/refresh/AL2705W5+gif/204548W_sm.gifWill I even be able to get insurance tomorrow? I started the application
with BoatUS today, and they said to call tomorrow to activate it once the
deal is finalized. But that was before NOAA issued their latest report. Ironically, the bank gave me the check today without getting verification of
insurance. I think they forgot. I could close on the deal tomorrow, but do
I really want to if insurance won't cover the boat until after the storm
passes? |

| I called them today, and at first the customer service rep said they could
not write any insurance binders until Tropical Storm Gamma passes. I then
spoke to underwriting, and they said that I was covered on the new boat
because I already had a current policy with them on another boat. I have an application number and the name of the person I talked to
underwriting. |

| My experience has taught me to NEVER take the word of someone over the
phone in this sort of transaction. Said person may not even be employed
by that company the day you call back, and if you you have no
'documentation' you are in for a long, drawn out, mentally draining
process. |

| NOYB,
No, do not close the deal till you have insurance. DUH! ; ) "NOYB" <noyb@noyb.com> wrote in message |

| Don't sweat it. If you advised the company or agent that you will be purchasing and picking
up the new boat sometime over the next week or so the policy will be in
effect once you do so. Although you cannot "officially" bind coverage with a VM message, it would
be in your best interest to verify your conversation with your agent via VM
tonight. After that, relax as you are covered. ;-) |

| == No. Don't even think about closing without insurance in place. |

| I have an application number...which has to be worth something. |

| Before the check gets handed over, I'll call BoatUS tomorrow morning. If
they say "no go", then I have to wait. :-( |

| That locks the deal. Confirm it with a call to your agent before you pick
up the boat tomorrow (even if you get VM) to confirm it. Relax. You will be covered. |

| Thanks, Jim. I take it you're in the insurance business? |

| In a way, yes. In the past, definitely. But my advice is solid regardless of my background. |

| ===== I would personally not be comfortable unless I had at least a fax copy
of the binder. When things go wrong it's what is on paper that
counts. For what it's worth, the weekend conditions on the gulf look halfway
decent (seas under 3 feet). Are you planning to come down inside or
outside? |

Have you ever purchased a car (new or used), advising the agent ahead of
time of your intention but driving it home before insurance papers were in
hand? |
Nov 18
|
| Outside...unless it's rough. I doubt that I'll leave the marina before noon
tomorrow...once the inspection and sea trial and paperwork is done. It's roughly 140 miles. If the seas are flat, I'll be home in 5 hours or
so. If the seas are up, it could be an all day affair...ducking inside when
I can. At least the winds are out of the northeast...which means they'll be at my
back the whole time. The longest stretch that I'd have to run outside would be from Venice to
Boca Grande Pass, right? |

| Being a betting man, I wouldn't take possession until you know the
weather has passed and/or your policy is bound. Don't let lust make you foolish. jps |

| I've been a betting man my whole life. I'll use my best judgement in the
morning. If BoatUS covers the boat, I'm picking it up. |

| = Not sure I understand your question. You can run inside the entire
way if you want, only a few slow speed zones and you should fit under
most of the bridges with no problem. The big decision is really at
Tampa since the Sarasota inlets are questionable without local
knowledge, probably OK for outboards however, just not in my boat. Coming in at Boca Grande has a lot to recommend it in any case since
Pine Island Sound is wide open, usually flat water, and essentially
with no enforced speed restrictions. There is a narrow cut close to
the beach on the north side of Boca Grande inlet which avoids the long
trip out and around. I've been through there twice with 5 1/2 ft
draft and had no problems. The locals do it all the time it appears. |
