PEARL HARBOR DAY REMEMBERED INTERVIEW AVAILABLE

SEATTLE- Every Coast Guard unit will fly the American Flag at half-mast today in remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Historians have well documented the Navy's role in the attack of Pearl Harbor, but less known is the role of Coast Guard vessels that were present during the attack.

A total of six Coast Guard cutters were stationed in Honolulu on Dec. 7, 1941 under the command of the U.S. Navy. The 327-foot Coast Guard Cutter Taney, two 125- foot patrol craft, the Reliance and Tiger, the 190-foot buoy tender Kukui, two 78-foot patrol boats and several smaller vessels were home ported in Honolulu during the attack.

For more information on the role of the Coast Guard at Pearl Harbor, such as testimonials from captains of the cutters, visit the following link: http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-cp/history/Pearl_Harbor_Index.html.

The Coast Guard Cutter Taney was decommissioned in 1986 and is now at the Baltimore Maritime Museum. To arrange an interview with curator Paul Cora regarding the Taney's role in the attack of Pearl Harbor, contact Petty Officer Mike Zolzer at 206-220-7237. ###
