boat trailer question
I will be looking at a boat trailer for sale by a tow company that has
been in their yard since it was towed by order of police.
It is a tandem, 31 feet long and that's it.
Here is question: The id plate has been removed (was stolen?) and on
it was the VIN and weight info.
The tow company has gotten new pink slip but they don't know the
weight ratings.
How can I tell if it is capable of carrying an 8,500 lb boat? What
should I look for, bigger wheels? Bigger springs? The frame? Size
and number of rollers?
Or am I taking a chance? (I can see putting my boat on it and the
damn thing collapsing, lol)
Thanks for any help

| Ok, but won't that just tell me the VIN for ID/registration purposes.
I don't think it will tell me weight info.

| If you can pull a wheel, the axle should be 1- 1/4 outer and 1- 3/4" dia,
inner for a 6 to 7,000# axle. The springs would have at least 6 leaves
(about 1/4" thick x 1 3/4 to 2" wide). A 3,500# axle would have a 1-1/16"
outer and a 1-3/8" inner with a 4 leaf spring.

| I am not sure Champion is still around. Slidell was pretty much destroyed.
Neighbor is trying to get me to go there end of March with Habitat For
Humanity to build houses. |

| But if the price is right and the trailer is in good shape even adding a
third axle might still be a good deal. Champion trailer has everything you
need. |

| There should be a vin number stamped into the frame somewhere. "Eddie" <hawaii-50@sbcglobal.net> wrote in message |

8500 lbs is a lot for a tandem axle trailer. Most tandems that I've
seen top out around 6500 to 7000, sometimes less. If you know the manufacturer you could give them a call. |
