Graveyard of the Atlantic

Those on the east coast of the US always refer to Cape Hatteras as the Graveyard of the Atlantic

Those in the Maritime Provinces of Canada always talk about Sable Island as being the Graveyard of the Atlantic.

How many other "Graveyards of the Atlantic are there?

I am not concerned about the IQ, but they should be permanently wired to a lie detector the entire time they are in office. :-) P

Yup. Back a ways there was talk of buying 8 nuke subs to control that area. Instead we bought four conventional used lemons from Britain. Politicians should have to take an IQ test before being allowed to run for office. Don

I'm flattered...but here is more accurate info: http://www.navy.forces.gc.ca/ Don

Tom, Canada does have a navy, in fact Don's sailboat is considered the flagship of the Atlantic Fleet. Smithers

Interesting link with interesting parallels! The Outer Banks of NC also has wild horses... descendants of those that survived ship wrecks. The original (white) inhabitants of the OBX also had the brogue of the british isles.. and to this day are referred to as "hoi toiders," and distinguished from those of the Piedmont (primarily Irish/Scottish), and the mountains (again, british, but with a different dialect).

Some other interesting points:

Nags Head... a place where a lantern was tied around a horse's neck to emulate a light house and confound sailors.. causing them to run aground and spill the ships contents for easy retrieval by OBX inhabitants.

Bodie Island... (pronounced "body" island..... a place where the "bodies" washed ashore...

Roanoke Island... the first settlement in the new world...

Much of this area is speckled with GA airports, visitor centers, fishing piers, marinas, campgrounds (some clothing optional (at times)), and dozens of other amenities....

A word to the wise, however, even (no, especially) for swimmers.... the water is incredibly treacherous. Boats transiting inlets should be competently skippered and have copious reserve power. The descriptor "Graveyard of the Atlantic" was given... it was EARNED......

No way! Ours is bigger & better than yours. Just ask us. Don

I see where your government is all upset about the American, British and French submarines traveling the Northwest Passage without telling them.

I suspect if Canada actually had a Navy, that wouldn't be much of a problem. :>)

Don, You know Sable Island is just a pretend Graveyard, don't you? ; )

The only real Graveyard of the Atlantic is Cape Hatteras.
