| ? from imdb... In Rio, Orfeo is a trolley conductor and musician, engaged to Mira.
During Carnival week, he sees Eurydice, who's fled her village in fear
of a stalker; it's love at first sight. Her cousin Sarafina, with whom
she stays in Rio, is a friend of Orfeo and Mira, so the star-crossed
lovers meet again. Later, during the revels, wearing Sarafina's
costume, Eurydice dances a provocative samba with Orfeo. Not only is
Mira enraged when her rival is unmasked, but the stalker, dressed as
Death, appears: Eurydice is in danger, pursued through noisy crowds
and a morgue. Can Orfeo conduct her to safety? Don't look back. which is how I remembered the movie. i don't get the bit about the
black boat. |

| There's a wonderful movie from the late 1950s called Black Orpheus. It's
in Portuguese, shot in Brazil, with an amazing soundtrack. Retells the
old Orpheus and Eurydice story. The protagonist is named Orfeo and,
naturally, he's a black man. Ergo, a boat with a black hull and named Orpheus is a movie buff's
inside joke. I first saw that movie at the Lincoln Theatre in New Haven in 1958 or
1959, when it came out. The Lincoln was also where I saw my first movie,
Bambi, in a re-run in the late 1940'. Bambi scared me. |
