Yamaha 50 four stroke vs 60 two stroke

I just thought I would toss this out for wreck'ed.boats consumption and see what opinions is here. We are looking at a small pontoon to use mainly as a fishing boat. The wife like the idea of having a small "couch" like seat for her confort. and it will be nice and roomy with the kids on board.

One of the local dealers has a nice little 20 footer that I think will fit the bill rather nicely. I am going to go with one of two power options. Either a 50hp four stroke Yamaha or a 60hp two stroke Yamaha.

I can get the 50 four stroke for $250 less the the 60 two stroke. I am not worried about the 10hp difference or the $250 bucks. Speed is not s issue either. Sound levels are important. (I need to look that up) So considering these facts.

What would you go with?

And why?

Could be true :-) I do thank you for your input.

As I would also like to thank infisherman, gfretwell, richg The boat I am currently looking at is already rigged for Yamahdog :-) Not sure if they sell etecs.

I will look into them.

that seems to be the way of it today - which kind of proves my point if you will - yamaha makes the deals with everybody dumping their engines on the market - prerigged.

i had the same problem with the contender, but had it rigged seperately. i had looked at a different boat, but they wouldn't sell me the boat without engines - didnt want yamahas.

i do know guys how have the lower power etecs and they really like them a lot. even over hondas believe it or not.

hey, good luck - however it works out. im a fan, but they arent for everybody.

Thanks. but in this exercise I will be going with one of the two options I specified.

Capt Jack R.. many thanks who have responded thus far, the four stroke is currently winning.

well, it's up to you, but you will be making a mistake. i forgot to mention etecs are quieter than four strokes. Shortwave

Having previously owned both a four stroke ( Suzuki) and now still owning two... two-stroke Yamahas (a 40 and a 50)... Go with the four stroke for peace and quiet on a pontoon. You won't notice that the engine is on with a four stroke.. Two strokes still have lots of advantages for my boats, but quiet isn't one of them ( even though they are very quiet, compared to a just a few years ago engines )..RichG TX RichG

I'd go with the four stroke. I have a Yamaha 115 4-stroke. It's quieter than my previous 50hp Yamaha 2-stroke. The 50 was a great motor and the noise wasn't excessive by an means. The 50 was about 10 years old though, so I don't know if that's a fair comparison.

I think you'll also find that the 4-stroke consumes less fuel. It may not be much of a difference though on a small motor, but it can't hurt.

Another reason is that the last time that I looked, the 4-stroke had a longer warranty.

The dealer should be able to tell you how much speed you'll be giving up. If you don't mind the loss of 10 hp, I don't think you can go wrong with the 4-stroke.

I have a 60 4 stroke Merc (licensed Yanny design powerhead) I think the merc is better, simply because of the "big foot". It swings a bigger prop and gives me unbeatable close in manuvering. It is quiet, no smoke and has a fairly flat power curve from idle to WOT. I never have that old 2 stroke "sneeze" and stall. On a pontoon you also have less of a step so there is a fairly narrow RPM range for the "plow". Everything else is an available speed. 2 strokes only seem to go "smoky idle" to 2800 RPM and up without much useful in between. I will never buy another 2 stroke unless I am buying a go fast boat. gfretwell

I get about 22 on the GPS with my 60 4 stroke. It was about 1-2 mph faster with a Mariner 75 2 stroke, now sold as the classic. (engines about the same weight) Pontoons tend to reach the point of diminishing returns where a lot more power only gives you a little bit more perrformance.
