Sunglasses

I need to upgrade my crappy sunglasses now that we are back into boating. The last nice pair I had ended up in Lake Erie 2 years ago while on a cruise on our friends Lyman.

Who makes a decent pair of polarized sunglasses with glass lenses? I think my last pair was a Sunglass Hut proprietary brand......no longer available.

My eyes are pretty sensitive to sunlight. Any suggestions?

Thanks, that's good to know. I have a 30 y/o pair that are going to need replacing one of these days. waynebatrecdot...

That's about what they charged me the last couple of times for custom made clip ons. Don
Feb 12
They SUX!!!!! Last 2 pairs I had both broke at the temple piece. Warrantee? 3 months, and you have to have the receipt and costs to send them back. For the money they get, forget ever buying Rayban again. Calif

What do you wear in Kansas...rainbow coloured lenses? Don

One word: China. Doug

So they pay $2 including shipping to the USA. So they should have no problem replacing them, for customer satisfaction. Still gives them a 1000% margin. Calif

If you have prescription shades ground, even if they are for no correction, you will get a nice light weight sunglass without any distortion. If you want to get a nice looking pair of sunglasses plan on paying $150 - $450 for the frames alone. Reggie
Feb 12
Doug, What do you mean the franchise opticians don't supply them? Do you mean they don't supply good quality plastic lens? My wife has always purchased her prescription glasses and sunglasses (ground plastic) from Lenscrafter's and has never complained about distortion

It wasn't distortion, it was vibration. Harley.... hmmf. -- 'Til next time,

Here's are two brands that have gotten a lot of complements from people fishing the Ches Bay. http://tinyurl.com/9no7o and http://tinyurl.com/cg8h2.

When boating, I need something that is more "wrap around" or my eyes water. As I have to wear prescription glasses, and don't want to fork over the $450 the optometrist folks want for sunglasses, I wear these:

I have two pair - one a dark amber (glass) and one a dark gray (glass). Both are polarized. I use the dark gray on really bright days, but the dark amber is what I use most of the time for all conditions - low light, middle light and dawn/dusk.

I also have a pair of shooting glasses which are dark yellow and I'm considering trying out the new red tint which I've heard is 'da bomb for middle light or cloudy conditions.

I got my lenses at BJ's.

Plastic, polycarbonate, etc., lenses suck.

Glass is the only way to go.

Shortwave
Feb 12
Barrel distortion is the problem for me as I have a strange astigmatism in my left eye - I can't get a good pair of plastic lenses in the type of glasses frames I like.

Glass is the only way to go.

Shortwave
Feb 12
Yes - and they sucked. Shortwave
Feb 12
No offense Doug - ain't gonna happen.

Every eye is different and while your prescription may allow that, most people don't.

Why do you think most of the major glasses outlets have a 30 day money back policy? Because plastic lenses suck- in certain frames, they really suck.

Glass is the only way to go.

Prescription or OTC?

Knock it off Bert - we're having a discussion and this totally wasn't called for. Shortwave

I've never had Ziess lenses, but I have had high quality AO lenses for years and have never had a complaint.

Until I was sold plastic lenses.

Shortwave
Feb 12
That's also crap. I've had glass lenses for a zillion years and never had one break in a manner that would ever cause damage.

On the other hand, I saw a kid take a soccer ball flat on his face and the lenses didn't give - cut him really bad.

Wouldn't have happened with glass.

This whole plastic is safer is a marketing ploy - plastic is cheaper and the profit factor is huge - that's why the hype.

Bullshit. I fish more than you do and have had more than one lure come flying at me - never a problem. No scratches and never a break.

You are on the wrong end of this one Doug. :>)

You were able to order glass lenses at BJ's ? waynebatrecdot...

Tom, you're right that plastic, in PRESCRIPTIONS, is not compatible with everyone. But, I'm talking about a NEUTRAL lens - no prescription, like the ones which some opticians install in "demo" frames. You can have polarized lenses (or any lens) made this way. At the right places, it'll be a better lens than SOME of the "ready-made" shades out there. I priced them once, when my son was still a bit wild with lure handling and I wanted him in some sort of eye protection. Ready-made shades were not sized right for him, in terms of the frames. Doug

Costa Del Mar. After owning two pair, I wouldn't buy anything else. Get the mirrored amber lens. NOYB
Feb 12
Plastic scratches too easy. I never get a scratch on my glass-lens Costa's NOYB
Feb 12
Although I'm talking about non-prescription lenses here, I've heard some odd things from friends who've gotten lenses made at Lenscrafter's and a couple of other chains. I'll qualify this, though, and say that I have a weird prescription, as others do, and the chains failed miserably at creating the lenses.

This sounds like I'm now blending two ideas - the quality of the raw material, and the accuracy of the prescription. Confusing.

What cut him? The lens, or the frame?

> Wouldn't have happened with glass.

???

Doug
Feb 12
Wrong optician! I've had some that sucked, too. Then, I switched places and the glasses have been flawless. To an extent, it depends on the frame choice, an issue where some places give lousy advice, or none at all. I have bad astigmatism, and I wear bifocals. The frames I wanted had a rather small vertical measurement. The guy pointed out that the bifocal "blend point" would have to be a compromise that I would probably find annoying.

Another issue with plastic is the introduction of torsion, however slight, by places that don't know how to properly fit the lens to the frame. They think tightness is the way to a secure lens. In fact, it's how they're fitted to the frame.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have a Sunglass Hut near me and plan to take a look at their collection. Gander Mountain carries the Costa Del Mar brand and I will stop there tomorrow.

Nice tip jps.....I will do that after I find the pair that works for me.

Feb 12
Glass? You don't mean glass. You mean high quality plastic. Doug
Feb 12
Why not glass?
Feb 11
Ditto. I've tried sunglasses made with different types of plastic lenses. Seems like all had some level of distortion or aberration. Nothing compares to glass IMO.

Plastic qualifies as a "sports" or "safety" lens. Nice for deflecting flying objects, like fishing lures. Glass does not. If you wanna do polarized right, go to an eyeglass place and ask them to make you a pair of polarized shades with no prescription. Doug
Feb 12
I agree. Harry

Ever had a properly made pair of plastic prescription shades that cost more than $100? Doug

I don't wear prescription glasses (yet), but I have tried some high quality (over 100 bucks) plastic sunglasses. You will think I am nuts but I ride a Harley and for some reason I have never felt comfortable viewing through plastic lenses, even the expensive ones. There is a distortion that I just don't like. I've noticed the same thing in some glass lenses as well, but not to the same degree as the plastic. A well made pair of lightweight glass sunglasses provide a non-distorted view that I am comfortable with when riding.

I agree. That is why I now insist on glass lenses. I have no problem paying up to $250 for a pair of quality glass lens (polarized) sunglasses. When on the water your eyes will thank you.
Feb 11
That's beside the point. I've had plastic prescription shades for 20 years. No distortion. Perfect. And, you can get them made FLAT. No prescription. They'll be thicker than ready-made shades. No distortion. Any perceived difference in weight is imaginary, based on the need to complain about something. Doug

When you do have the oppourtunity to wear corrective lenses don't settle for anything but Ziess lenses. Their hi-index lenses are the best that I have ever worn. Bert

Feb 11
Glass is funny when it breaks. Especially around eyes. That's why most schools won't let kids play sports if they have glass lenses. Doug
Feb 12
Come on Bert, give it a break already. This NG has generally been without insults and flamingjoin in on the new and improved version. Give it a go.
Feb 11
I don't play sports while wearing sunglasses.

I have never heard of a fisherman on Lake Erie suffering an eye injury because of glass sunglass lenses while he/she was fishing.

Care to provide some proof otherwise?

Feb 11
Why do you suppose plastic is pretty much a requirement for people playing sports? Heavy lobbying by the plastics industry? Or, could it be based on experience with the way glass shatters? Doug
Feb 12
Buddy of mine had a near miss with a lure that ripped out of a fish's mouth. And, you're in a moving "vehicle". Anything could happen. Seriously - if you haven't had high quality plastic lenses, you're missing something. You generally have to go to a small optician to get them. The Pearle Vision / Lenscrafter type places generally don't supply them. Doug
Feb 12
Fair enough. I will check them out when having my next eye exam.

Bert's in a four-way with Snipper, Ms. Smith and that foul-mouthed what's his name...fighting for the bottom, as it were. Someone has to do it. Harry
