West Marine deal on Battery
West Marine has their 650 MCCA starting battery on sale for $39.95. Good
deal- Snagged one. They have a $5.00 core charge on your old battery- so
bring them one if you buy it.

| I received the West Marine flyer yesterday and saw this battery. Does
anyone have any experience with this brand(SeaVolt)? BTW: Great price on the Interlux Bottomkote ACT antifouling bottom paint.
($70/gallon). |

| I used West Marine brand batteries on my first Sea Pro many years ago,
and had no problems with them. If memory serves, I bought a pair of
"dual purpose" batteries for starting and for running a salt water
trolling motor (and electronics, of course). West Marine has used several suppliers for these batteries. |

| I wonder who the manufacturer is. |

|
| Oops. You said several. Edit. |

| Well, they sell several different lines of batteries. At one point, they
looked like "Exides," but I haven't looked at them for many years. What
really matters is the warranty, and I've never had a problem with West. |

|
| I agree. One thing that they are very good at is standing behind
their products. |

|
| They can well afford to! It's not so much a warrantee, as they let you pre-pay
for the second one when you buy the first. |

| There's a convenience factor also which is hard to quantify, but it is
certainly worth something to me having a well stocked store 10 minutes
from my house and open 7 days a week. |

| I was content to lurk on this thread, until I saw the comment about "well
stocked." In my experience, West Marine is anything but. They are always
out of whatever I need. Yes, when they have a sale, they have those
items, but if you want something that's not in the weekly flyer, you have
a 50/50 chance at best. The comment always when I mention the low
inventory on what I actually want to buy, "We're getting a shipment
tomorrow." Yeah right, I used to fall for that, only to come back the
next day and the next to see the same empty spot on the shelf. West
Marine makes an obvious practice of strict inventory control. Only
problem is that it's so strict they often lose the sale because they
don't have the item to sell. I don't know if it's gotten better recently
with the BoatsUS merger, because I gave up on them and now go to my local
independent dealer. He has a small shop, stuffed to the rafters, but
somehow always manages to have what I need, and usually for less. |

| I bought one today. I asked if there was a core charge since I didn't have
an old battery with me. They said no. It is the 665 MCA that is on sale
for $39.95 not the 650 MCA. That is a $30.00 savings. When the salesperson rung up the sale he told me that he got a $1.00
commission on every battery the store sold. I have no idea why he told me
that. |

| They get a commission on batteries because the normal markup is VERY high. That
battery is no doubt the same one sold under other names elsewhere for $39.95
every day of the year. Take that battery to Walmart and compare it's weight to
the comparable one they are selling. Cheap batteries weigh less. My bet is that
your battery will weigh the same as the one at Walmart. |
