Trailer Wheel Bearings

Hi there. I am new to boating, having just bought a 14 foot day boat and trailer last weekend. I have been checking over the trailer and I dismantled the wheel bearings to check them. They are a pair of tapered roller bearings, fitted to a hub with 'HG 505' marked on it. The thing is, the hub has about 2mm slack when I tighten the hub nut fully. I would have thought that there would be less play. Is the hub assembly worn? Any ideas on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks Davy M.

Not only that, but it should be a washer with some sort of anti-rotation device. Gene

Is there a washer at all? There should be. Chuck

Hi James. The hub nut is butting up against the stub axle when tightened. I would need to fit an oversized washer to slide over the stub axle to tighten the bearings any further. I would probably have to make the washers up to suit. Thanks for your input. Davy M. New2Boating

On every tapered wheel bearing I've worked on you can lock the bearings by tightening. That is the normal adjustment, tighten and then back off slightly. Is the hub nut bottoming out on the threads? Perhaps the washer between the nut and the bearing is missing? If not I would try an extra washer.
