River Widowmaker dynamics

I live in Portland, Oregon, which is on the junction of two large rivers......the mighty Columbia and the Willamette. Downtown Portland is on the Willamette. Anyway, often the Willamette is a debris minefield, and last Sunday evening was no exception. We had to slow to 5 mph to safely navigate patches of it.

This morning, returning on the Willamette to our boathouse on the Columbia, we scarcely saw a stick. Why? There was little weather to speak of, so run-off couldn't been a factor. I'm wondering if the time of day has something to do with it. River traffic stirring up the stuff.
