Engine Bummer

Well guys, I need your help. I've got a Neptune 1800 with a '94 115hp Johnson (J115TLERC) and the engines basically gone beyond repair. Compression of 30 on the 3rd cylinder. The other 3 are much higher. The engines already been rebuilt and the mechanic says it'd be a waste of money to try that again.

I'm a poor young professional, but I really want to have a good fishing boat to keep my life after work fun, and I can't stay away from the water. The boat is in pretty good shape for an older boat, seems to still float.

Whats the best thing to do with the boat/engine?

Should I sell the engine separately and buy another engine? If so, how much will it cost me to buy a nice reliable engine that will work with my boat?

Should I just sell the whole thing to someone and buy another boat?

A boat recycling company has offered me $400 on the motor. Is that a pretty good resale value for a motor with a busted cylinder? OldReliable

I really don't know but given the age and horsepower it certainly sounds like it might be in the ballpark. Have you priced any used motors to get an idea of what is out there?

If you're happy with the boat, your cheapest option is to find a good used motor to replace the one you have. Of course if you find a used boat/motor combo at an attractive price you could always sell your existing boat as is. Wayne.B
