New DC boater?

I'm beginning research to buy a powerboat in downtown DC. I grew up waterskiing and boating alot in my youth and teens, but haven't touched it since.

I live in Du Pont circle and would mostly cruise the bay and short trips up and down the coast, as well as park the Georgetown waterfront on saturday nights. I probably will waterski some, but mostly just cruise fast and listen to music. ;) My budget is around $15k-20k, used.

I'm looking more for something fast, instead of something that sleeps 4 or 5. I would only really need to sleep two, and I'm not sure on traveling capacity. The furthest I could ever see going is Hatteras.

I know this will be a process, but I was looking for direction about docking in the Washington Powerboat Marina (in the Potomac near Old Town). This was because I don't own a car and would like to just taxi out and take the boat out a few times a week.

I was also interested in sources for comparing and shopping for powerboats, instead of only grabbing the latest boating magazine at the bookstore.

For 15-20K, that sleeps two, you're probably looking at a 21 foot cuddy cabin, or thereabouts. I would probably sell mine in that ballpark, if I were selling. A trip from DC to the Bay is a long way in a boat that size. To get to Hatteras is probably a nice dream.

If you're talking about Washington Marina, in DC off Maine St, the slip fees are $9 per foot per month, or $189/month for a 21'er. In Alexandria, the marina behind the torpedo factory is full. I couldn't find a "Washington Powerboat Marina" other than mentioned above. Belle Haven Marina is just south Alexandria. Here is a site that shows some marinas in and around DC with links. http://tinyurl.com/hgrnp

I live in Alexandria and do my boating in the Chesapeake Bay. About the closest marina for me is in Deale, MD. When I want to play in the Potomac, I trailer my boat down.

Check how many actual miles it is from DC to the Bay. You may end up reconsidering the idea, unless you're talking about a trailer boat. And if you're talking trailer boat you may want to rethink the 'going to Hatteras' idea.

Good, fast, cheap... pick two.

Your budget won't even dock a boat there.
