Mercruiser 302 problem
I recently purchased a Sea Ray with a 188 HP Mercruiser 302 or "888".
The boat sat for a year, but when put away ran perfectly and oil
pressure was documented at shop. While stored the engine became
partially submerged and some water got into the engine. The engine was
not run with the water, and after 3 oil changes was started after the
carb was replaced. It started easily and ran fine. No oil pressure
registered on dash and red light was illuminated above key, which I
traced wires and deduced it was low oil pressure idiot light. I
installed mechanical gauge at the engine and confirmed there is no oil
pressure.
There is no noise when running, other than some lifter rattle. I
pulled the distributer thinking maybe the union with intermediate pump
shaft had sheared, but both ends appear to be in tact. I am building a
tool tonight using an old distributor to get a drill on shaft just to
rule this out completly. Anyone dealt with this motor, and seen
anything similar. Please Help!!! Thanks. |

| I had an old MarkTwain with a 165 horsepower that I pulled the pan without
removing the engine. If there is room for you to work then you may be able
to do it. Its gonna take a lot of head standing though
good luck "Weldo60" <weldo60@yahoo.com> wrote in message |

| I've been doing a bit of thinking on this, and I had an 83 lincoln with
a 302. a real work-a-day bone. suddenly the oil litght came on just a mile from home. I limped it in,
and called a mechanic friend of mine, knowing I'd jsut blown the
engine. When he got there, we started it, and all seemed normal. held
it at a slight high idle, the clattering stopped and it ran good. we
shut it off and it happened again, no oil pressure. He suggested
changing the filter, and it woked good for about 300 mi. then same
thing. change filter and go again.
But It got to the point that wasn't going to work so I junked the car.
but it worked for a couple months till I got another beater. so, I'm
thinking that for some reason, you have some deffinate oil pump
problems. |

| agreed! you "might" be able to get the pan bolts loose, but you'll
still have to fight tearing the pan gasket. (Which on a Ford 302 is two
piece!) then getting the pan down to clear the sump of the pump just
isn't going to work. THEN even if you could, you STILL would have to
replace the two piece gasket, which is a fight in it's own right. |

| Does anyone have any thoughts on pulling the oil pan and pump without
removing the engine. I believe that with some extension and swivel
sockets I may be able to have enough room to get the thing out. Any
thoughts or suggestions are much appreciated! |

| No way that is possible, sorry. You can loosen the pan, maybe, but it's
not nearly coming off. Rob |

| Agreed. the oil lfloats to the top and leaves the water at the bottom.
probably a plugged screen, or pick up tube. If it was mine, I would
pull the engine and flip it, and change the pump. I know it's a hassle,
but then again, it's cheaper than buying a short block and doing it
anyhow. |
