Question about a Mercury Merc1150 engine.

My Dad and I just purchased a used pleasure craft with a Merc1150 engine. We tried to start the engine today, but the battery in the boat was low. It didn't have enough power to really crank the engine. The question I have, though, is would it be a problem to shoot a bit of ether in one of the three carburetors on the engine to give it a kick? And if the engine can handle a shot of ether which carburetor should I apply the ether to? Also, are there any additives that should be put in the gas mixture that will help the engine with cleaning or operation? I have been looking for an operators manual online, but even if I find an inexpensive copy, it will take a few days to arrive. We need to determine if the engine is going to run in the next day or two in order to return the engine if it is nonfunctional. Thanks.

Start with a fully charged battery, and resist the temptation to shoot ether into the engine. The ether can cause pre-ignition, and blow a hole right through the top of your piston. If you can't start the engine the last week of April without ether- you've got a problem. chuckgould.chu...
