Leak in bilge area
I have a 1995 Four Winns with a 5.0 Cobra Ford engine with a OMC
outdrive. I'm getting water in my bilge area, I've looked from inside
the boat and can see water coming in at connection located up above the
drain plug. Not sure what it is but looks like it is made of brass, the
water comes in when boat is in the water without engine running. I have
also put in drain plug and put some water inside the boat and can see
water leaking out behind where transom plate where it is attached to
the boat. Don't know if this is surpose to be like this or not but
have notice that when I put the ears on and run water with the engine
running, the water will come out back of the outdrive through a opening
instead of the opening around propeller. Is that normal? |

| Does the outdrive have to be removed also ? Guess I was thinking that
the seal was on the outdrive side, or is there one on each side? |

| I don't know for sure. I had the dealer do my job, and the only thing I
remember was that they specifically told me that the engine had to be
pulled. I would guess the odds favor removing the outdrive as well. It's
probably a process that is not very different than the original installation
of the entire powertrain into the boat by the factory, since the seal in
question is the interface between the outdrive housing and the transom
itself. |

| Cobra drives of that vintage have what's called a transom seal. It seals
the outdrive housing to the transom. Over time they will start to leak and
need to be replaced. Yours is experiencing the undeniable symptoms of such
a leak. The definitive test is just what you've done. Put water into the
bilge and watch where it comes out while the boat is on the trailer. If
it's seeping from the bottom of the outdrive housing where it mates to the
transom, it's the transom seal. I had to have mine replaced on a 1995 Four
Winns with a King Cobra drive with the exact same symptoms. The bad news is
that the engine needs to be pulled to replace the seal. If you don't have
the equipment to yank the engine out of the boat, it's a dealer or repair
shop job. |
