Lawn Mower Overflow

Hi

My gas lawn mower was working fine till last week. I found that it was short of oil, so I added some and was mowed for another couple opf weeks. This week, when I tried to turn it on, there was oil spill below the engine and mower is not turning on. Is this overflow or did I do something really stupid? If it is overflow, please advise how to fix it. Thanks. Tom.

Thank you all for your replys. Adding to Original Query: It is a Briggs & Stratton 6.25 HP Two stroke engine. Please Help! tozach

If it's a Briggs it was meant to last 10 minutes!

I was in the gardening business and then mower business for about 20 years. The Briggs was always a pain. The very best mower ever was Toro's 21" commercial with a two stroke engine. It ran forever.

Then California outlawed the two stroke on mowers. Had to buy in Nevada. Don't know now if they're available at all.

No way.

That's assuming you can even find a seal for that engine.

I know they u sed to make two stroke mowers, but I'll bet it's been at least twenty years or more since they stopped. Shortwave

Two of them here in town - antiques and they drive them around all the time during the summer.

One of them even has custom machining on some of the parts.

Oh, and one General Lee in town - just thought you'd like to know that.

I found some, then noticed they were manufactured and sold in the UK.

Also found something you might be interested in. Some engine manufacturers are using E-Tech technology in some of their small, 2 stroke engines for items like lawn trimmers. Husky and Husqvarna are two examples.

They still make 2 stroke mowers, at least Lawn-Boy does.

I worked in a dealership for 4 years. They sold Toros and I bought one. Guess what? Briggs engine on it! That rider worked fine for 15 years, only minor tune ups, carb etc. I've got a Honda pressure washer. The carb jets are so tiny in that thing that they clog constantly.

Engine reliability is a direct result of proper care. Lawn Boy is using a lot of Tecumseh engines now. They are rock solid. But I'll take a Briggs over about anything for reliability, except Kohler.

Nope. Lawn Boy still makes two stroke lawn mowers. basskisser

This is about 21" mowers, not riders, and engines of about five HP. Riders get into bigger engines and nowadays have OHV twins and even 4 cylinder.

But for the usual small mower engines, 21" or less, especially consumer junk, the Briggs is designed to be low end and cheap as possible. A consumer 21" mower with a Honda is a much better choice.

And to think that OMC used to own lawn boy. then sold to Toro. OMC, made some mfj. blunders with them over their leaky gas tanks, sold to Toro, and didn't tell anybody, even though they had corrected the tank issue, there were a crap load of them out there with bad tanks, and now the monkey was on Toro's shoulders. OMC didn't tell, go caught and got fined... but thats about it, from what I remember..... tschnautz

I have to disagree. According to Consumer Reports, mower engines up 5.5 hp, Honda has just a mediocre repair dollars history. Briggs? First. If you belong to Consumer Reports you can look the info up. They don't let you copy and paste links to specific information if you subscribe, it comes back as timed out. But, it's simple, Briggs are very easy to work on, they are tough, and if they do break, parts are cheap. That is NOT the case with Hondas. basskisser

I'll be danged - didn't know that. Shortwave

Just looked at their site...seems they now use the three following motors..Briggs & Stratton, Honda & Tecumseh. You may have to find an older model if you favour 2 strokes. ....or get with the times and convert. http://www.lawn-boy.com/ Don

Is it a Yamaha, Mercury, Evinrude, Honda, Suzuki, or a Tohatsu/Nissan? Two stroke or four stroke? Dan

It's been years since I had a gas lawn mower.. (21), but as I remember it, wasn't there a spot on the fill tube that indicated when you reached the correct amount of engine oil? I'm assuming this is a four stroke type and not a two stroke like the Lawn Boy brand. Don

By under the motor I assume you mean under the deck? If so, that may be the shaft seal where the crank exits the block.

Shaft seal. If it's a smaller engine, then buy a new mower. Shortwave

Say what?

I mean I know two strokes rule - four strokes drool and all that, but since when?

You're unaware of these two stroke lawnmowers? For shame. Harry

Two stroke lawnmowers were good for stealing the engine from them and building a go-kart. I haven't seen a two stoke lawnmower for years and didn't realize they were still made. Which triggers another memory .... ever drive a 60's or 70's vintage Saab with the 2 stroke engine? I drove one occasionally when working at a garage after school in New Haven. Weird car.

Hehehe. One of my father's friends owned a Saab dealership, and the Saab US headquarters at the time was practically down the street from my father's main store. There were Saab's everywhere. They had an...interesting exhaust note. Left an interesting smoke trail, too. I only recall red Saabs, and the red color faded quickly. A high school friend of mine's father got him a Saab to bomb around in. He lived off Seneca Road, at the top of Fountain Street, about the last street in New Haven before you entered Woodbridge. We ice-skated on Bishop's Pond right over the line in Woodbridge.

We lived in the area I circled near the bottom of this map:

Another 2 cycle wonder of the time: the DKW.

If it's a Briggs, it's a ten minute fix. basskisser

Darn close to being next door neighbors. We lived in Woodbridge, just a few miles west of you ... near the Bethany town line.
