Audio terrorists take to the water
The latest assault from the "it's all about me" crowd is taking
place on America's waterways and it's a damned shame. I wasn't
fully aware of it until last week but I wasn't surprised.A calm afternoon on Jenkinson Lake, CA was ruined by a group of
rich teens (or yuppies) blasting hip-hop and other junk while
hundreds were trying to fish and camp in peace. Their powerboat
stereo had walloping bass and was audible over most of the 2-
mile long lake. Flat water propagates noise with cruel
efficiency, like a bullet skipping over the surface. Swamping the shore with wakes is no longer enough for these
spoiled ingrates. Smug power-boaters now want to pollute the air
with their sound waves. I don't visit semi-wilderness lakes to
hear idiots cranking Devo's "Whip It" while towing brainless
chicks on inner-tubes. It really taints a nice day. Loud boat
engines are already too numerous. Some fishermen were not-so-jokingly planning to sabotage the
raucous vessel when it docked. Audio terrorism is bad enough in
cities, let alone outdoor settings. If I was sheriff these fools
would have their boat and truck impounded, with the stereo
neutered. N.C. |

| I know exactly what you're talking about! Here comes more unenforceable
legislation. I think I'll make a video game where the player gets points
for shooting out the speakers on the towers of these inconsiderate ignorant
knuckleheads. |

| Damn, the word "terrorist" is sure getting a lot of play now days.
Anybody that does anything someone else doesn't like, is now called a
terrorist?
If you was sheriff, under *what* laws would you confiscate their boats
and trucks and rip the stereo out? Do you realize by being like you
are, that you could have ruined THEIR day as much as they ruined yours?
How do you know they are "idiots" and "brainless"? |

| Oh bullshit. The sheriff can write 'em up for a noise ordinance violation.
If they're dumb enough to do it repeatedly the court costs and hassles will
eventually help the modify their behavior. To say someone else complaining
about this audio abuse is even anywhere remotely similar is utterly
ridiculous. Go troll with a better argument. |

| I suppose none of you guys are interested in helping me get a little
more volume out of the 760-watt amp and four 6x9 4-way speakers I have
on my wake tower, yukyuk :-) |

SOME people here! |

| While you can't get the cops to do anything about my cranking music I, on
the other hand, can as soon as you even wave your 12 guage in my direction. |

| Seeing how you're from California, where everything is sweetness and light,
you probably haven't pondered the idea that these pathetic morons would not
hear a gunshot over their music. |

wonders if circumstance allowed. They spent most of their time
near the middle of the lake, which tells you how loud the music
was. I am not exaggerating; this was concert-level noise. Actually, California has plenty of "rednecks" outside the major
population zones. But, as the population grows, more thugs seek
escape in the remaining "nature" areas which can hardly be
called that anymore. Bring on the growth, the idiot businessmen
tell us. N.C. |

| You've got to keep an eye on your local politicians. They're the ones who
really affect our lives, much more so than the idiots in Washington. |

| I agree with Harry - .50 cal right into the stern drive. Although I'm surprised that somebody didn't call the sheriff. Doesn't
CA have some kind of statewide noise ordinance for this kind of thing? I mean if they can restrict leaf blowers... |

| I really don't encounter too many "pests" on the water these days, at
least not enough to raise my ire or the issue here. I sure do run into these "audio terrorists" at stoplights, though, and
usually they are in tiny Pacific rim autos with $3000 worth of "stereo"
installed, and almost always playing "rap" hoodlum music. Doesn't matter
what color the driver is, either. It's always the same crap with the
same deep bass beat. When one pulls up next to me at a stoplight, I usually yell out the
window for the jerk to "turn that crap down." Sometimes it works,
sometimes I get the "bird." Man, that music is awful. And it's not an age thing, either. I like
rock, even heavy metal and some grunge, and the occasional rap. |

| Why am I less than convinced the problem was as bad as you describe? Could it be all the anti-powerboat rhetoric? Sailors apparently never make any noise or behave obnoxiously on the
water? In addition to the "loud music", you list creating wakes and operating
boat engines among the many offenses of "smug", "idiotic"
powerboaters". Could it be that you haven't figured out how to convince one of those
"brainless chicks" to let you drag her through the water behind your
sloop at a blistering 5 knots? If one group of kids with an inappropriately loud stereo ruined your
afternoon that's unfortunate, but given the number of people we meet in
all situations these days and the number of inconsiderate behaviors
encountered, you must experience a lot of ruined
days or weekends. That one group of kids doesn't typify most
powerboaters, however, any more than the "smug" and "clueless" group of
sailors who suffer from an unwarranted superiority complex and disdain
all other types of boating typify sailors. |

| I'm no powerboat fan but the issue was sheer music volume. It |

| That was quite obvious as Chuck clearly pointed out. Do blowboaters ever crank their stereos up or sit on their bow playing
1970's folk music on their guitar in a crowded marina at night? |

| I live on a river in N. Illinois. July 4th, a guy with his new boat kept
coming up about 10 ft from the bank pulling his kids on a raft. Then he'd
swerve out to miss my dock and circle a couple of times before heading back
downstream. My son was visiting with his $ 16000 duck hunting boat tied up
to my dock. After the third time the guy did this, he jumped in his boat
(all 6 ft 3 inches and 250 lbs of him) and caught up to the guy and stopped
him. He asked him where his dock was so he could go terrorize his dock.
Of course the guy trailered his boat to the river but he got the hint and
the next time he stayed a couple of hundred feet downstream of my dock. Son
said he took pity on the guy and tried not to embarrass him too much in
front of his wife and kids. The guy may have been worried that he had a
"redneck" problem as the boat is camoflage painted, even the motor cover and
my son keeps his hair short and always wears a baseball cap with ducks
unlimited on it. Tom G. |
