I would like opinions on outboard motors, ie. the best!!
I'm in the market for about an 90HP outboard to replace my Force 85. I
have gotten a little bit of info on Mercury, Yamaha, Susuki, & Honda.
Prices don't seem to vary much. But I would like to get a good engine
that's reliable (well DAH!).Recently I got a price on a new Merc 90 Saltwater that was about a year
old, but not used, still in its crate. The price was $5k. Considering
I've been getting quotes between 7300 - 7500, It look ed like a good
deal. But would Yamaha be a better choice?? I have read several
messages praising Yamaha, but I'm looking at a $2500 price difference
also. I would like some feedback as to the differences in the motors to
justify spending the extra $2500. AND why I shouldn't spend the extra, You guys know more than me about these things!! Thanks in advance for your support!! |

| The 90 Merc is a good deal if it is what it's supposed to be. If this does
not work out then you may want to check into the 90 Evinrude saltwater

| I have a 90 hp Merc Optimax and it's a dream. Quiet as a mouse and
barely sips any fuel at all. I got out 3 - 4 times between fill ups
and rarely have to add oil. And, the system to flush those babies out is so easy, that's the part I
like the best. So far, it's been a dream. I've had it about 3 months, so I can't tell
you long run, but so far so good. |

| So no one here likes Hondas ? I know from experience their cars and
lawnmowers last just about forever with proper maintenance. Does this not
flow over into their outboards as well ? Duke |

| Mercs use a Yamaha design power head but all the screw on parts are
merc. I am guessing you are talking about a 2 stroke for $5k
I am really happy with my 4 stroke ande I would never go back.
If this is a 90 4 stroke for $5k, do it. Just be sure they give you
the full warranty. |

| My first choice would be a Tohatsu/Nissan, closely followed by a
Yamaha. I've owned both and they are pretty much trouble free... just
do the maintenance. Merc's may be better these days, but the one I had
years ago had so much trouble I'd never buy another. |
