93 Sea Ray 200 w/ 4.3 pulling power
I've heard mixed things about the power of the 4.3 MerCruiser on a 19-20'
boat from it'll pull an adult skier easily to it's not powerful enough.
Does anyone have experience w/ this motor in a similar size vessel and if
so I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts. Thanks,

| The v6 is a decent motor choice for that size range. The one to avoid
is the 4 cylinder in anything over about 17'. The v6 has a bit less hp
than the 305 (5.0L), the smaller v8, but the v6 also has 2 less
cylinders so the total weight of the v6 is lower than the v8s. Even
the smaller v8 does have a bit more torque simply because of
displacement. That is helpful for skiing. Imho there is a little gain
going from the v6 to the small v8 but it won't be shocking or anything.
The next engine after that is the 350 v8 (5.7L) which would have
plenty of power in a boat that size but usually has a cost premium on
it. The 5.7 is often the top of the line engine choice in that size
range. TD wrote: |

| I have a Monterey 196 with the 4.3/190hp V6. I does fine, but I am a bit
underproped with my top RPM at about 5000. The hole shot is improved with
this 18"SS prop, and acceleration is greatly improved. Almost everyone
says to put the biggest(most pitch) prop that will give you 4600-4800rpm at
WOT(wide-open-throttle), but I almost never go WOT and prefer the
performance the lower pitch prop gives me. |
