do I need CA. registration for this?

hi all,

I've a 8 ft sailing dingy and if I put a 30 lb thrust electric motor on it just so I can have a easier time when going up the channel(upwind), do I need to register it(in Calif)? thanks

Bill......what is it that you do not understand about the requirement to register motor driven boats in California?

No, but it looks like you have as I guess you missed this part:

"...and every motor-driven vessel (regardless of length) that is not documented by the U.S. Coast Guard which is used or on the waters of this state are subject to registration by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)."

I thought the criteria just about everywhere was "motor driven." Harry

Is an answer that says he may have to register the boat as it is on the cusp. Contact the DMV and they will answer the question for him! Is it called an 8' pram, while being 8'1" long, or is it 7'11" long. You smoking or drinking from the same well as Kevin? Calif

Yep. It is powered and therefore requires registration.

I don't even live in LaLa land and know that.

Hey Bill.bite me.

From: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/boatsinfo/boatreg.htm

------ What Vessels Must be Registered? Generally, every sail-powered vessel over eight feet in length and every motor-driven vessel (regardless of length) that is not documented by the U.S. Coast Guard which is used or on the waters of this state are subject to registration by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The vessel must be located in California.

As your boat will be motor-driven at times, then yes, you must register it.

Remember that Google is your friend. ;-)

Yes, you may have to register the boat. $10 for 2 years (maybe $20 now, wife writes the checks) and the cost of a set of numbers. 8' is a cut off point. Calif
