Mercruiser 7.4L Bravo I lower unit

has anyone had any experience replacing a lower unit or lower gear case on this engine? boat we are considering is a 1989 Carver 2557 with this engine - have been told it needs a lower unit - any advice or experience with it??? thanks

Lots of people have experience with them. Need to be sure exactly what needs replacing. Some poeple can be kind of vague with the label "lower unit". The outdrive or just the bottom half? Lower gear case suggests just the bottom half. How good is that diagnoses? Most of your cost will be for the unit. Installing and removing is not a big deal. Price will vary a lot depending on if you go new, rebuilt, or used.
