work to be done - fair?

I have twin Merc cruisers outdrives on a 277XL Commodore Regal. The mechanic wants $585 to sandblast, prime and paint.

The materials will cost around $160. $100 for the primer and $60 for the paint (6 spray cans @ $10 ea.) The labor will be: sandblast: $150 prime and paint: $275 total $585 I can't exactly go around shopping for a competitor price as the boat is on blocks at his marina. This is my first time doing the outdrives and have no idea if this is a good deal or not. Any help appreciated The boat is in the Ca. Delta Eddie

I don't think sandblasting is a very good way to go. If I were to sandblast these units... and they would have to be VERY corroded for me to even begin to consider such a plan... I would dissemble them to insure that no sand got inside and that I didn't damage any sealing surfaces. I have spent thousands of hours sandblasting and I can assure you, that as the sheik said, "Sand gets everywhere." No amount of taping and/or masking will prevent the inevitable and only one grain of sand can destroy a seal surface.

If you do go down to bare metal you really need to Alodine the aluminum parts, prime, and paint. It sounds a little bit to me like the quote is for quality (2-part) primer and elcheapo outdrive paint. For $60 you should be able to get a quart of the good stuff.

I think the soda blasting route is a much better option.....

It's my rice bowl, but I really have no idea what this particular right-wing scumbag is posting about...maybe it's "Skippy"?

If he had any brains, he'd know I'm not hesitant to post "a bunch of CRAP" under my own name.

Sandblasting aluminum seems to be a radically stupid idea. Pressure washing removes whatever junk and loose paint just as well, but doesn't damage the protective aluminum oxide film.

Hell, we all know that!! :-) You've been this NG's most consistent producer in that department for years! John

Huss, are the outdrives made out of aluminum? I will install new props, so not worried about that. You sound like maybe sandblasting may not be the way to go. He did pressure wash the entire boat, including the outdrives before painting the hull. But I notice the outdrives still have a whiteish rough texture. I want the drives to be smooth for painting. How else can I get a smooth finish? Eddie Eddie

Sandblast or...baking soda blast? Not that it should make a difference in price, but wouldn't soda be better?

I watched a brick wall covered in graffiti cleaned with a soda blast. It was amazing: no damage to the brick or the mortar joints.
