SOT: boating with degenerative disc disease

(SOT = Semi off-topic)

So I've apparently got "Degernative Disc Disease" (everyone gets this with age), and been diagnosed with a pinched nerve in the neck which was giving me massive pain in my left shoulder. It has gotten better to some degree, and I've been managing the pain. Some days are better than others, and it is slowly getting better. Doctor says it will take time.

So question is, how bad is boating for the neck and spine, and is it good advice to go out on the boat from time to time given the above information?

The lakes I go out on do tend to get pretty choppy at times, and I "try" to take it easy when I see the waves coming and all. But I'm just wondering how much wear and tear I'm putting on my neck, and disks in my neck going out on my Bayliner 175? Has anyone ever considered this, and put any thought into this, or have issues along these lines ?

Thanks

The wear and tear on your neck from being bounced around is considerable, and not really worth the risk. My wife has similar issues and it has been a large factor in the last couple of boats we have purchased. Long and heavy, with a V bottom is the way to go for a smooth ride. Unfortunately that's not particularly good for speed and economy, but those are the tradeoffs we've experienced. Some of the smaller speedboats like the Bajas seem to offer a reasonably good ride when operated at moderate speeds. Wayne.B

It can be difficult and it's something that I deal with everyday.

You need something long with a deep vee - say in the 24' range to be totally comfortable.

However, as long as you can keep the pounding down and the side to side motion relatively stable, you should be ok.

By the way, have you seen a neurologist and did they recommend neck traction? I have the exact same problem with additional complication of moderate spinal stenosis and rheumotoid arthritis. I took a course of treatment with neck traction and I haven't had to return yet and it's been over a year.
