Sea Ray Water leak

Bravo One Experts: I have water leaking into my bilge when my engine is running. It's coming from the lower part of the transom plate where the exhaust lines meet and go out to the discharge ports (as best I can tell). Any idea what it is? Thanks.

Only when the engine is running? That seems odd as that area is usually below the water line. The Y pipe does bolt on there and could leak water. But I would expect a leak there to leak all the time. Could it be running down the Y pipe form a higher point and you just didn't see it? Or do you mean it is leaking there while running on the trailer?

You could have a leak in the shift cable bellow or the Y pipe could have rotted out. I don't know why running the engine would have any effect since both items are below the water line. With the engine off, tilt the drive up and steer side to side. Notice if there is any change of the leak rate. It would be helpful if you had an assistant for this test. Jim Jim

Thanks. Doesn't look like the shift cable boot. I'm starting to think it's a rotted Y pipe. Stuck a hose in the port exhaust hole of the stern drive and water leaked back into the boat. I'll try your suggestion. Knucklebuster

There is a gasket on the end of the Y pipe that you can check as well. If it's a trailer boat and doesn't have a history of sitting in the water then the Y pipe is usually ok. They mostly rot out when sitting in a slip. The big hassle is that the engine has to come out to get the Y pipe out.

I was afraid if that. Do you know off hand if the drive has to come off too? I guess I'll start pulling the engine and see what I can find. That just kills me because the darn thing is new and I could have looked at this before it went in. Thanks again. Knucklebuster

The drive has to come off the bell housing to get the engine out because the drive input shaft ges into the coupler on the back of the engine. The rest of the drive stuff stays on the transom. The Y pipe just bolts directly on. It's easy to remove when the engine is out. jamesgangnc

I'm not sure if the Bravo is similar to the alpa1 or not, but I had the o-ring on the water pick up port go bad and had the exact problem. When the engine was running, it was actually pumping water into the main bellows and filling up the bilge. When the motor was not running, there were no leaks. It would also pump a very small amount of water through the shift cable and onto the top of the motor.

Has the out drive been removed recently? If so, maybe the o-ring is pinched....

Most likely he has an engine mounted water pump with a thru hull pickup. Bravos not the same as alphas. jamesgangnc

I had the drive off the replace the engine, but is water is warm so I don't think it's coming from the pickup. Never the less I have to pull the drive to get the engine out, so I'll be sure to take a look at everything very closely. I'm hoping it's just the Y pipe gasket that Jim was talking about. If not I'll have to break into the ole piggy bank again. Thanks! Knucklebuster

Used Y pipes go for under a $100 on ebay all the time. Anyhting for a boat that's under a $100 is a bargain :-) jamesgangnc
