Need help choosing the right prop

Hi there,

My mercury 2 stroke 3 cyl. 80 HP needs a new prop, it has a current SS prop 3 blades 13,5" 19p. He's doing 5000 RPM at about 38-39 miles on my fletcher arrowstreak GTO 161.

So I was searching on mercury marine on their "prop calculator". My goal here is to have good allround performance. I found this prop: Trophy plus 13,75" 19P 48-825932A46, I like the idea of having 4 blades and therefore better acceleration and less fuel consumption.

This prop seems to get good scores on all available choices (acc., top speed, handling, overall performance, mid handling) but I',m a little bit scared, my RPM will drop too much...

Would this be a good choice for me? Perhaps anyone knows a better choice for me?

thanks, Foppe

It's something of a guessing game, but that quarter inch at 19p might actually drop your RPM up a little.

You could certainly entertain testing a 13.5/21p four blade - that might bring your RPMs up a little into the 52/54k range rather than swinging the larger diameter prop.

I will say this - I went from three blade to a four blade on my E-TEC and the difference was, well, spectacular to say the least. The boat the E-TEC was installed on became a whole new boat with that prop. Well, the new engine helped, but still. It has great forward bite and gives a lot of bow lift which brings the boat on plane much quicker.

The only semi-touchy part is that in sharp maneuvers, you have to be aware of your trim switch and use it to maintain speed.
