Tall tales of the sea.
So I had this idea while working on the Ranger this afternoon. To wit: I'm sponsoring a contest for rec.boats participants. The rules are
simple The rules: 1 - There must be a minimum of fifteen participants in the Tall Tale
contest for the prizes to be put into effect. 2 - The Tall Tale must be fiction or at the very least, told in the
fashion of sitting around the bar going somebody one better. 3 - The Tall Tale must involve boating, cruising or fishing or a
combination of those subjects. 4 - The Tall Tale must be sent to me via email - I will publicly
acknowledge who has sent a tale here on rec.boats and repost it to
rec.boats. 5 - I will ask for a panel of non-participants in this contest to
judge the entries. The Prizes: First Place - $75 Second Place - $25. Third Place - haven't figured that out yet. So, before sending me your entries, what do you folks think - good
idea? |

| Rather than fabricating a story how about a real life adventure? I am sure
we have some members with some pretty scary, real life tales to tell. I
realize that there is no way to verify if the story is correct (such as
Skippers old tales) so we would operate on the honors system. I agree with others that no money prizes are needed. Lastly, regarding the judging staff.....there are too many folks here
(myself included) with killfiles. We also have some folks who posted their
outright dislike for other members here. Realizing that, perhaps it is best
that the judging be done by you and your wife, especially since as you have
been pretty impartial to the various persons and personalities here and your
wife most likely does not read the NG. JMO. ;-) |

| I almost liked Skipper in some of his previous incarnations, but when he
returned the last time, he obviously had devolved into something
absolutely from the gutter. |

| Have you heard the one about the Sudden Onset Tostito? Man, those waves
were enormous. There we were, in our 22' Bayliner, with no warning, when
the sky suddenly turned dark and stormy, and we were facing 30' waves... No email yet, BTW. |

| Prize money is way too high. Satisfaction in a job well done should be it's
own reward!

| Good thing Skipper isn't around. He'd have that $75 all wrapped up.
The only odd thing...he'd swear his ravings were all true. |

| You are obviously a complete novice when it comes to running a "writing
contest". Where's the entry fee? The combined fees from the minimum number of
entries should be at least 5-10 times the total prizes available for
payout. :-) Then, once the contest is decided, all of the prize winners as well as
the dozens of runners-up will be offered an opportunity to purchase a
case lot of special edition books suitable for presentation to friends,
family, and business associates. The books wll feature "an anthology of
the finest emerging writers of maritime fiction." (40 books in a case,
"wholesaling" at just $25 per copy. Cover price $69.95. "Oprah Winfrey,
here I come?" No, make that "Flea market, here I come!") Sounds like fun. If you get enough entries to actually run the event I
would be happy to serve on the committee reading through them and
render an opinion. *Might* even publish one......but won't commit in
advance. :-) |

| Boaterdude, are you aware that the original author of this "sea tale"
claims that it's a 100% true story? Eisboch |

| Eisboch, I've been with this group off and on for a few years, but under a
different name (honestly can't remember what I used to use before I
moved a couple years back). Yes, I remember Skipper, and the love/hate
relationship with Harry. But I do NOT remember this story. It's hilarious! -Jim |

| I think your reference to Skipper's and Harry's "love/hate" relationship is
also hilarious. I am sure Harry will appreciate it. Eisboch |
