Engine Hours and MTBF

Im looking at purchacing a 7 year old Johnson 200hp Outboard with approx. 400 hours on the meter. (Ocean Pro)

Right off hand, this sounds like alot of hours to be running. But, what do I know. I've only owned a few outboards and never had one with an hour meter.

Any opinions on whether this engine is due for a rebuild with this many hours?

Thanks

Just follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedules and don't let the engine sit around a lot between trips and they will run forever. gfretwell

It's a mere pup. I have about 1700 hours on my Merc 4 stroke and I put over 3000 on the Merc/Mariner I replaced. The real question is how does it run and does the owner have the maintenance records. Is this salt water?

If you are really worried check the compression and drop the foot for a peek at the innards (corrosion on fasteners etc.) Just be sure to use anti-sieze on any bolts you put back. If it comes apart, the previous owner did.

Its actually attached to a boat that Im interested in:

A 1999 212WA Hydrasport. He's aksin' around $13-14000 for the whole rig.

I've spotted some Aquasport Walk-arounds today on Boats.com. I REALLY like that hull design.

db~still trying to get used to the idea that its ok to go out in the ocean with *only* 1 engine.

considered thoughts to the readers of rec.boats:

It isn't, unless you are the size of a container ship.

Out of curiosity, what is the owner asking for it? Short

That's less than 58 hours a year. That's not much at all. I've seen many of these go past 1000 hours with hardly a burp. I did two hundred on my new E-TEC this year alone.

On the other hand, they can be pigs on gas, but as far as hours go, that's practically mint.

I would have a good mechanic go through the engine just to be sure - all the usual stuff like compression, voltage checks, general condition, etc. At the same time I'd replace the impeller and have the shaft and gear oil checked.

How is it cosmetically? Anything major?
