problem with key turning to start engine

We just purchased a 1994 Kingfisher with Mercury 125 hp motor. Ran great the first day---out in the bay, no problems. 2nd day--added gas and oil, tried to start it---the key turned but no sound---tried several times--battery checked out fine. Later, tried to start again and key would not even turn. There was never a clicking noise on the first tries and now, key doesn't move! Could I need a new starter switch?

could run a line from the battery directly to the starter...that'll tell you if the switch is bad. wf3h

Most likely.

A good way to determine it is find a test light (NAPA/Big Box Mart of your choice - couple of bucks) and just see if you get current when the key is switched on - the light in the handle of the test light should turn on.

If not, then pull the cover of the engine and see if you have a loose connection at the starter. There is also an in-line fuse, usually located at or around the starter and look at your battery wiring - there is usually an in-line fuse there. Check through the wiring for any other in-line fuses.

Do your gauges work when you turn the key switch on?

You need a new switch.

You already have a wire run there, just jumper out the starter solinoid. gfretwell
