Bayliner 16 ft, Fish and Ski...

Hi All! I'm excited. We just agreed to buy a bayliner 1995 bayliner 1600 Capri LS. It's 16ft long, comes with a trailer, motor (force 70) and actually works! Got it for a song, so I figure it's a good way to get into boating and to learn. there are 2 problems with the hull. The Gel coating was damaged in 2 small areas. And the floor boards are "spongy" in an area. How hard is this stuff to fix? The previous owner has been using a piece of plywood to lay over the floor. But it's not rotted through, just soft. Hard/necessary to replace the flooring? How about the gelcoating? Hrd to repair? The owner said I could just do a fiberglass patch over it, but I'd like to hear how to do it right.

Thanks for any help! Brian\

BTW, got it for $1250.00

If the Force runs well, you got a good price on a outboard with a boat thrown in. I'd do as another suggested and not sink a ton of money into it, and use it as is, maybe overlay and screw down a piece of plywood over the spongy area. Good luck, have fun, be safe.....ps there are numerous online articles on floor replacement - no links for you though- google away. <WBrianMurphy@gmail.com> wrote in message Darby

If you end up cutting out the floor, make mearsurements of the width of the boat at several places and make a couple of braces to keep the sides from moving outward. The floor acts as joists to keep the sides in alignment also. Calif

Fair and he can't keep up with the demand.<<

I believe it. That stuff was everywhere in Disneyland. Just the smell of it makes me want to lean overboard...

My first boat was a 16 footer and had a soft floor too. I picked it up for 300 bucks because the seller thought it did not run. Good deals are out there...but usually only from owners who know nothing about the boat they own. Which is the biggest "BEWARE" out there.

If you plan to replace the flooring yourself, be sure to use marine grade ply woods. I covered the plywood on both sides with a double layer of fiberglass repair. I completely removed my floor and found structural problems below it. Even that was not hard to repair. But this was a month long project. I was not in a hurry.

13 years after selling that boat, I still run into the new owner at the various lakes I frequent. He's always pleasent and cheerful which leads me to believe the flooring held up.

Damaged as in a bump/blister looking thing? It will probably require Short

Hmmmm - a little suspicious.<<

Great price, but it has some problems. I sold a 1995 19' Reinell bowrider last year for $7800, but it was in pristine condition. My guess is that there are probably some outdrive/engine problems hiding there as well.

At the end of the day, if he spends 3-4k for repairs to make it a solid boat, he's still in good shape.

What provokes your ridiculous personal remarks? Certainly isn't anything I post about you- I virtually never mention you. Our apparently increasing mutual disdain doesn't need to be constantly inserted into random threads. Chuck

Jesus Chuck - just funnin'.

You seriously need an injection of humor. There was nothing personal in that - in a million years you couldn't make something personal about that unless you really, really wanted to.

And you were the one who insisted that there is a $10,000 market for $6,000 boats.

Remember that?

Come one man, I respect you and always have - you are knowledgable, if a little wordy, and I have never once blasted your articles when they were posted here. I may not agree with you on some issues, but I have never disrespected you.

Well, ok, maybe the Bayliner thing but you deserved that. :>)

I have a good friend who makes it by the ton for the Woodstock Fair and he can't keep up with the demand.

Makes a lot of money for the Academy Band program.

Stuff still sucks.

Tom- I'm sorry if I over reacted. Please accept this public apology for a rather nonproductive public comment. Taking daily shots from a couple of darn-nearly nonboaters who hang around here primarily to post off topic and make negative personal remarks has me overly sensitized. If I had my 'druthers, I'd just simply avoid name dropping in any of my posts and ask others to do the same. It's the topics that are important here, not the personalities.

This is supposed to be a newsgroup. Observing that "Gould's an a-hole" is hardly news. :-)

As far as a $10,000 market for $6000 Bayliners goes, some people might be very surprised at just how regional the market for that particular brand can be. Undoubtedly there are places where a boat that would bring $10k in the Pac NW would have to be dumped for $6k to find a buyer- but a boat is only worth (locally) what it will sell for (locally). I can't remember stating that some boat sold for $6,000 should have brought $10,000- as an ex yacht broker I would hesitate to assign a value to any boat without a personal inspection. I do admit to, and stand by, an observation that an advertised price for a boat that results in the phone ringing off the hook or the email box filling up almost immediately was likely too low. The boat market will never be a "seller's market" unless the seller makes an obvious sacrifice.

Congratulations! If you don't have a lot of money in buying it, be careful about putting a lot into it. Make sure it's safe and you are too by doing some studying of boating rules, carrying the right safety equipment, and not putting yourself or loved ones in danger. If you're handy you can replace the plywood yourself, and there's lots of guys here with boat experience that can give you some tips about that and fiberglass repair. Good luck and happy boating!

No apologies necessary Chuck - but it does show that you are a classy guy.

And I promise I will never mention the Bayliner thing again.
