2007 Bayliner 185 Idle Problem
I have a new 2007 Bayliner 185, with a Merc 3.0L 4Cyl engine, and an
Alpha 1 outdrive. My issue (my dealer's issue to be more accurate) is this: At idle, warm or cold, the engine vibrates horrendously, to the point
where it resonates (shudders) throughout the entire boat, shaking the
gunwales. The idle is currently at about 600 RPM. I have also
noticed that when I took the boat out of the water, the transom has
some black film on it. At speed, basically anything above 1100 RPM,
the engine performs perfectly. The boat has about 3 hours on it at
this point. It is going back to the dealer tomorrow for this issue,
but I was wondering if anyone else had run into a similar problem? Other than this, I have been pretty happy with the boat. It planes up
in seconds, delivers the promised 42 MPH (on GPS) and is very stable,
even on the choppy early spring waters of Lake Erie. Thanks, Randy. .. |

| mine did exactly that, and I found it had a blown head gasket and
burnt valves on #2 and #3 cyl. Do a compression test. |

| Not to be a wise ass, but do not pull the wire with your hand. Started
a scoot once and noticed a wire had pulled off, without thinking,
reached down and grabbed it to put it back on. Holy shit, what a kick,
almost knocked me off the frekin thing. |

| Don't make no nevermind. With only 2 power pulses per revolution, the
crank pulses heavily from the large displacement power pulse of each
cylinder on big 4's. Result-shakes like a MF at idle.

| The problem is the lean setting of the idle mixture. The boat had to be CARB
compliant so Merc set the idle mixture as lean as it will go. When you take
it to the dealer they will say that it is nature of the beast, BUT you can
fix the problem after your waranty expires. On the side of the carb you will
see a tamper proof plug/circle, under that plug is the idle mixture screw.
Fatten up the mixture and the idle should smooth out just read this and it
will explain it all http://p076.ezboard.com/fbocwebfrm33.showMessage?topicID=313.topic
good luck
by the way I have the same engine in a '05 175 Bayliner

| IT went back to the dealer today, and they replaced the carb, TKS
(turn key start) unit and 'raised the float levels' whatever that
means.
He started and ran it for me before I took it home, and it was WAY
better...It is not as smooth as a FI 4 cyl, but it is good. I will
take it out on Saturday and see what happens... Thanks, R. |

| Sounds like it is missing at idle. 4 cylinders are much more noticable when
they have a miss since each cylinder is 25%. Problems with the idle fuel
circuit in the carb maybe. Raise the idle speed a little bit and then
remove one plug wire at a time while it is running and see if it changes.
If you find that removing one of the plug wires has no effect on the idle
then that is your problem cylinder and it may be ignition related. If every
plug wire changes it when removed then you have a random miss and it is more
likely fuel related. <wtp07rsb@yahoo.com> wrote in message |

| Big 4 cyl engines are known for heavy idle. The automakers have known
for a long time the max size for acceptable idle smoothness is about
2.5 L. Above that, the shake from the power pulses is very large. You
can help it some by raising the idle speed to 900 RPM or so. The
engine's ECM may not allow this, and there is probably no actual
mechanical adjustment. See what the dealers lies suggest.

| Don't those engines have harmonic balancers? |
