Anybody on the water today?

Heading out in a hour or so to test a boat.

Should be fun - repowered 23' Hydrasports CC - bolstered stern with twin 250 Verados. A lot of work done on this boat - came from Mississippi after Katrina.

Haven't really wrung out a pair of Verados yet - should be fun. It will be interesting to see how they compare to ETECs.

I'm going into this with an "open" mind. ~~ snerk ~~

From your site:

"By perusing the latter, one finds that the top selling truck model in Canada is the Ford F-Series pickup, with total sales of 72,128 units. That beats the Civic’s number by 2,100 units."

Whoops. Sounds like a reading comprehension problem to me. Maybe you should stop with the bullshit accusations. You usually end up looking like a young turd.

If the Corps would leave some water in Canyon Lake above the conservation pool level, or let water out on the weekdays, I'd be out there. Instead, they're trying to push 2k-5k CFS down the local little lake that I like to go out on and thats much too much water for a small channel.

The Democratic Congress did not establish a secret energy policy with the nation's drillers, importers, refiners, et cetera. Dick Cheney, acting on behalf of the oil interests, did. HK
May 6
How do you know the Democrats in Congress did not establish a secret energy policy with big oil to increase the price of oil? BAR
May 6
How do you know they both didn't?

Makes sense - the oil companies got what they wanted and the enviros (aka Democrats) got what they wanted. Eventually, oil use has to drop becaues of price.

The real problem is the trading pits. The information flow is now instant - somebody sneezes in Nigeria or Saudi Arabia and five seconds later, it's headline news. There isn't enough time to adjust - you have to instantly react to the news and "do something".

And when you add in the fact that there are only so many refiners that can produce only so much fuel the price goes up. One refinery sneezing makes the market move instantly - resulting in instant price changes at the pump - justified or not.

Consider this. Two months ago, gas was at $2.34/g at a local retailer. Today, it's $3.15/g at that same retailer. What's changed? The supply is adequate, nobody is sitting in long gas lines - essentially nothing has changed.

What has changed is expectations. There are worries about July and August supply problems which are reflected in today's prices. It's an any excuse market in which any news that reflects negatively in any fashion pushes the price up.

Can't do anything about it because that's how the markets work.

Here in CT, we have "zone" pricing - which basically says that gas pricing is done by "zones". In theory, the more affulent parts of the state pay more than the less affluent. That doesn't work. Gas is cheaper in Greenwich, for example, that it is in Putnam which is economically disadvantaged. Can't do anything about it because our brilliant Attorney General, Democrat Richard Blumenthal, claims that this is only a temporary effect - it's been temporary for the past ten years.

Both the politicians and the suppliers are letting the good times roll because (1) the politicians (D/R) are in the pockets of the oil companies and refiners and (2) the oil companies are rolling in cash because of the good prices.

As usual the little guy is getting it right up the patootie. CT is considering an increase in the gas tax of .06˘/g - and they are serious about it. They also want to change the current tax structure to a base level of where it is now (plus the .06˘) and add a percentage of 10% "surcharge" usage fee on top to pay for some I-95 project in New Haven. They claim that the 10% fee will go away once the project is paid for.

HAH!!

~~ mutter ~~

Rant off. :>)

The real problem is that the White House has no compunction about allowing Big Oil to perpetrate and perpetuate as big a ripoff of the consumers as possible. President Idiot just doesn't give a damn. Remember, he's the same guy who thinks it is a great idea to export as many US manufacturing jobs as possible, and to allow in as many illegals as possible, in order to drive down the wages of US workers. A bunch of 12-14 year old kids (boys) were in line ahead of me at the grocery store this afternoon. Being normal kids of that age they were yuk-ing it up and grab assing.

One was holding his designer ball cap in his hand and was complaining that it didn't fit right anymore since his mother had made him get a haircut. He was still complaining as he plopped the hat back on his head ... sideways with the bill pointing out over his left ear.

What's with that, anyway?

Not on it, but in it. It's a trout stream day. You wearing thermal waders?

I have an exciting day: my wife wants to buy a "fountain" for the garden, to take advantage of the fact that I have an electrician coming next week to do some wiring for my kitchenette. I think she thinks I am more than willing to dig the 50' long, two foot deep trench it will take to bury the wire. Right. First thing, I'll call the rental store for a Ditch Witch.

Outdoor "house voltage" wiring is a mystery to me. Can it be tapped off an existing outdoor plug, or will it have to go to the panel?

I will get to the Greek festival this weekend. Dammit.

HK
May 5
No - thermal underwear under sweat pants, and heavy socks. JoeSpareBedroom
May 5
Sorta depends on how much power the fountain pump requires. Is it 120v or 220v? Around here, the "ditch" is supposed to be 18" deep minimum.

If it's a light duty, 120v pump only drawing a few amps, I'd use direct burial wire, #10 (due to the length) and tie it through an outdoor switch or timer to a GFI protected outlet.

Eisboch

Eisboch
May 5
Ahh...direct burial wire...that's what she can use to tie up my casket after I dig the ditch! 18" sure ought to work here, since our freeze is a lot less than your freeze. I have an exterior GFI outlet...is it safe to assume an electrician can wire an outdoor timer to it? As you might guess, I don't "do" electricity. HK
May 5
BTW .... all above is assuming the existing outlet is on a 15 amp breaker.

Eisboch (not an electrician)

Eisboch
May 5
Yes. But then again, that's me. The electrician might have other thoughts or be more knowledgeable regarding your local codes. I have a good understanding of electrical issues, but don't always follow "code" precisely.

Eisboch

Eisboch
May 5
Nothing to do with freeze depths. It's to avoid driving a horseshoe stake into the wire.

Eisboch

Eisboch
May 5
Code varys wildly with locality as to the accepted depth so find out before you dig. Many allow a shallower depth if you put wire in that gray plastic conduit. jamesgangnc
May 5
Either direct burial or wire in conduit will work here in Missouri, but must be 36" deep. This is a safety thing, since our freeze level rarely approaches 12".

CATV= 18" min (6" house drop) Phone & Gas = 24" min (12" house drop phone, 24" gas) Water= 36" min (always 36") Power= 36" min (always 36", risers in conduit)

I would follow code. There's always a possibility that a shallow A/C wire could come back to bite you if someone else digs into it.

Steven
May 5
one thing... 14 ga can handle 15 amps, and a 50ft run is not far considering how long most cable runs can be in a house. The pump will likely only draw a few amps, so that makes the guage requirement even less of a concern.

You'll be more than fine with 14, use 12 if you want. 10 would be WAY overkill unless you're planning to rival the Bellagio.

Jack
May 5
Let me put my electrical inspector hat on (fl lic BN2102)

Barring a local rule (none in Florida the "NEC" is code, state wide) The NEC 300.5 says direct buiral cable (UF) shall be 24", Rigid non-metalic conduit (the grey stuff) shall be 18" and rigid metal conduit (threaded steel) shall be 6" minimum depth. There is an accomedation for residential, 15 or 20a, 120v, GFCI protected that says it can be 12" and that includes rigid nonmetalic and direct burial cable. Rules change when you go under the driveway or a public street. I agree that unless this is more than a 1/2 HP pump this can share the regular GFCI outside outlet circuit and 14ga should be fine (assuming 15a circuit) Most small fountain pumps are smaller than that.

I've learned my lesson having been married for 37 years. That small pump today won't be big enough in a year or two. So, I always run bigger rather than smaller, just in case. <g>

Thanks. I'll follow the electrician's directions for the ditch. Took three guys to get the damned fountain in my vehicle, and of course there was only one at this end to get it out. One of the pieces weighed 265 pounds. No handles. HK

Hope you had a good time. Ours is sitting in my drive with the winter cover off and the batteries charging. Will take it to the marina tomorrow to start working on it.

Used our Fuel Perks points (30 gallons max) and filled up my wife's Highlander (16 gallons), put 10 gallons in the boat topping it off and the remaining 4 gallons in a gas can. All for the price of a little over $5.

The Democrats already took control of Congress on January 4th.

Average price of regular grade gas on January 8th: $2.258

Average price of regular grade gas on April 30th: $2.922

That's a nice 29.4% increase...in just under 4 months. Even Cheney's gas-manipulation powers can't compare to that of the evil Demoncrats.
