Pearson 26, Spade Rudder Shaft- Solid or Tubed?

Hello,

I am going to be working on a Pearson 26 rudder. I have looked at the webpages that come up on web searchs for Pearson 26's. They do not mention if the rudder shaft is solid or a tube filled with resin.

My shaft in question has some corrosion pits near the bottom seal. They are an issue structurally if it is a rudder tube. They are not an issue if the Pearson is equipped with a solid metal shaft.

There appears to be a shaft composed of tubing filled with polyresin. But that is just by poor examination of shaft corrosion pits?

Does anybody know the specs for the Pearson 26 rudder?

Thanks in advance,

Doug

I bought a 1 1/2 inch emergency rudder tube. I will place a plate on the end of a ten foot aluminum tube.

And make a way to power and/or sail a sailboat with a lost rudder.

I have no idea if it is a solid tube.

BMG metal Inc Mansassas, Va.

All sorts or metal.

A lost rudder can kill.

Do you understand the ramification of lost at sea?

So I looked up on the internet for emergency rudder building. I bought a tube 1 5/8 inch diameter schedule 80 pipe for $90.00

I willmake it into a self steering rudder someday. FOllowing Letcher's book.

Can you get at the top of the shaft for a look? Most are hollow in my experience except for the smaller ones. Wayne.B
