| following well considered thoughts to the readers of rec.boats: >have heard it's 650lbs!
> Nope, it's a bit heavier! 25" shaft / 804 lb ; 30" shaft / 822 lb Heavy, but still lighter than 350 HP worth of twins.... or as twins,
still lighter than a triple.

| Considerably lighter than an I/O or straight inboard also. At 800+
though, that is not exactly your father's outboard. |

| I am quite sure Tom has a team of black ops lobsters he uses to screw
with newbies. Apparently these lobsters have hanaeus weapons called
"lobster traps" which they use to snag and steal land-dwellers bait
and tackle. Sneaky bastards they are, but I know about em' now, next
time I'll be ready;) |

| Harry,
I have to agree with you, small is best. How much gas do you think you burn
in the average summer? |

| I phrased that wrong - my fault. My only excuse is it was late and my
eyes were crossing. I was reading a report on it and I was looking at the figures - didn't
account for twins. However, according to Yamaha, 5900 is WOT - at .9 gph that translates
to - mumble mumble - 34 GPH? So at 4500, according to Yamaha, 18 GPH? I ain't buying it. |

| I was looking at a Cape Horn and the guy is selling the boat, but
keeping his engines. I was seriously considering that Yamaha 350 as I
wouldn't have to use duals - I seriously want to uncomplicate my boat
life. I'm not so sure I'm going to do that. Yamaha is making some claims
that I'm not convinced are - er...Kosher. :>) |

| Are you referring to Yamaha's performance sheets? My experience with
them, though limited, indicates they are spot-on. The other Yamaha
owners I have talked to with all manner of boats indicate they are
damned close to their results. Maybe you should come by here after the Annapolis powerboat show. The
local Grady/Parker dealer puts on a couple of days of water demos with
help from the factories. I am sure there will be several boats with
350's mounted, and you can try them out. Some years ago, at that event,
I got a ride in the first and only diesel jackshaft 28' Parker built.
Cool ride on a really rough day. That exact boat is up for resale by its
original owner. Is it just the fuel burn that intrigues you? My new boat/motor combo hasn't been tested by Yamaha, so I got a
performance sheet from the Parker factory, which runs its own tests. The
guy who ran the tests told me my results would be a bit better than his,
and he was dead on, including the fuel burn. It really serves no purpose
for these guys to put out made-up numbers. |

1.29 MPG out of 1000 cu in at 33 MPH is pretty good. Not my kinda
boat, but still an interesting string of numbers....

I suppose, though burning $75 in gasoline an hour to go fishing seems
kind of stupid, no matter how much money you have in your jeans.
Actually, if you have a boat like that, you're going to burn a lot more.
No one puts 1000 hp on a fast boat to go slow. They're going to be
running at 60 gallons an hour, I'd bet. $200 an hour in gas, and for
what? To further enrich our good buddies in the Middle East? I banged around on the boat for about five hours Wednesday, covered
quite a distance at reasonable speeds, cruised in and out of a couple of
harbors, trolled for Spanish macks and blues for a few minutes, and
burned about $20 worth of gas. I'm not playing holier than thou here, but to buy and run a boat that
you'll be burning 60 gallons an hour of fuel on seems...absurd. |

| Me and T did a lot of traveling the other day. 95 % of the time he was
cruising at 4000. Only once did I see him throttle up from there, and
only for one quick leg. Just my observation. But then again I was
under attack by trained lobsters so I was somewhat distracted. |

Trained lobsters? How well are they trained? Do they jump into the
steamer on their own? |

| Well seeing that Yamaha was instrumental in the design of the engine
for the Ford Tarus SHO, I can appreciatee that. In fact,t hat's what I was thinking your post was about, Tom that Yammie had decided to make an outboard with that SHO sitting on
top. ?: > |

| Oh you love it and you know it;) Imagine the carbon footprint you could lay down. All you would need is
a gasoline powered tow vehicle, and a yammy 350, folks here would
start dropping like flies. You could take out Harry and all the Global
Warming lemmings in one clean sweep;) |

|
| Er, you would happen to do this after I questioned Harry about
entering a thread with a snide political remark..... |

| Well, maybe not political, but I can feel the squeeze coming. ?: > |

| Something there does not compute unless we are talking twins. That
engine solo should burn about 35 gph at WOT, something like 20 to 25
at 4500 rpm. 52 gph would be entirely plausible for twins at fast
cruise. |

| Triples! That would definitely do it. Considering it is 11,000+ lbs as tested, 36 ft long, doing 50+, not
too bad actually for gas engines, just a little tough on the gas
budget. I have neighbors with I/O speed boats in that size range that
burn about the same. |
