Bass fishing season

Here in Mich. the DNR is looking at some different proposals to change the fishing season & actually add in some time for catch & release. What I would like to know is where you guys are from & tell wether your state has a closed season for bass long with a period of time that you can catch & release

Here in PA (& NJ) bass season is generally closed for a 2-month period from late April through mid June. We are permitted to C&R all we want. My club holds "paper tourneys" during the "off" season which are generally the most exciting tourneys of the year. Pulling 19# pound "bags" this time of year is not uncommon, as we try to schedule these events during the peak of the spawn in each lake. Sometimes we miss by a week or two, but more often than not we hit excellent sight-fishing.

I love the spawn period.

Wisconsin has an open season from May 1 through March 6, so they have a closed season from March 7 through April 30.

In addition they also split the state into a northern and southern zone as follows; Northern zone C&R only from May 1 through June 18, after that date daily bag limit of 5 with 14" minimum length. Southern zone no C&R period, daily bag limit of 5 with 14" minimum length.

There are a couple of footnotes about this info; 1 - The Northern zone is only approx. the northern 1/3 of the state. 2 - This is for both Largemouth and Smallmouth bass. (All hail the river Smallies! Pound for pound the scrappiest, fightn'est freshwater fish, period.) (And with the state record of 9 lbs. 1 oz, that person must have been fishing with Muskie gear (or wishing he was!) to land it. Indian Lake, Oneida County, 6-21-1950)

On BassFan.com, "Dock Talk" section, they say those changes will give the shaft to bass anglers by shortening the tournament season. They provide a link to this story: http://www.mlive.com/sports/fljournal/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1085067396135 530.xml

Here in NY, the bass season is closed from December 1 through the third Friday in June. During the closed season, it is illegal to fish for them, even on a catch-and-release basis. There's a good chance that starting in 2007 there will be catch and release allowed during part or all of the closed season.

CT-- no closed season except that it is illegal to fish for anything on trout stocked lakes between 4/1 and the 34d sat in apr.

MA-- no closed season on anything

VT-- Bass season opens 1st weekend in June, but C&R fishing for them is legal.

And there's still some decent smallmouth fishing in Indian Lake. Just down the road a bit, my partner Gil caught a 7 lb. 1 oz. smallie, what a pig that was! He caught his while walleye fishing, on a 6' light action spinning rod. Steve

The season is closed until aproximately July 1. If you catch a bass out of season you better move to another fishing location or face dire circumstances. I was fishing the shallows for lakers with a spoon. I caught a big bass out of season and released it. The regs and pier pressure made me stop fishing even though there is a marginal chance of catching a laker in the shallows. The same scenario follows for pike and brown trout during April. I doubt if a CO could make a case unless there was possession of an out of season fish. As i said before there is pier pressure whether or not ther is piers present. CO's have a way of sneaking up on you since you are so focused on fishing. That happened to me when i was salmon fishing. He was trying to determine if i was trying to foul hook a salmon and at the same time do a license check. They always greet you in a couteous mannner and 2 seconds later announce "license check lads". lurebuilder

Warren, Isn't there something in the Pa regs that forbid casting to a bass on a nest, or words to that effect? I'm sure there's something in there about it, but my kids kinda played with my copy into oblivion.
