Surprise Reel Performance

I have a Daiwa Baitcaster I bought last year from Wally World for 69.95. I haven't used it much this year because I have been busy wearing out my Quantum Accurists. Just for the heck of it I took it out in the driveway last night and played with it. I think I had a 5/8 oz jig tied on it, and its spooled up with 50# Power Pro. I set the magnetic brake to the free position and started practicing pitching and flipping with it. Wow! I could really slam a pitch and it just wouldn't back lash. I started slinging overhand cast as hard as I could without even turning the reel sideways.

At one point I backed of the spool tension almost until the tension knob fell off. I did get it to backlash a couple times, but I was really trying. It does not cast as far as my Quantums and certainly not as far as my Pflueger President, but it was impossible to backlash when pitching or flipping, and difficult to backlash even casting.

I'll post the model number this evening when I get home.

I had it on a 7' medium power and action rod. I imagine it will perform even better when I switch it to a 7'10" or 8' heavy power flippin' rod. Its amazing how a little experience changes your perspective. I think this would be an excellent beginners reel. I doubt it will have the durability of some of the more expensive reels, but it certainly is easy to use.

Sounds great, do they make it in a left-hand version?
