? GPS/Finder combo units
I am close to deciding upon a GPS/Finder combo and Lowrance has my
attention. The $500+ investment is significant so I'm moving slowly on this
one, but with an upcoming night tournament on an unfamiliar lake I feel the
need to have GPS on board. Opinions and recommendations are solicited.

| I use the Garmin 168 GPS Sounder it works great, it shiped with the
Fishing Hot spots 4.0 sofware which was nice, but to add additional
regions was very expensive. The 5.0 software now covers 1/3 of the
country so it is a little more affordable. I really like being able to look at the bottom contours on a gps map and
compare it to actual depth -- this made it possible up in Boom lake last
year to go up river withough worrying about bottoming out. We didn't
fid any fish --- but we didnt beach the Zen Basser in the process,
either. if you can wait, I suspect color units willbe much more affordable next
year -- or - the grey scale units like mine will be discounted. For
example, Garmin now prices wither Fishfinder 240 at $199 -- a year ago
is was $250. |

| I agree with Garmin. The software makes all the difference, and Fishing
Hotspots is something that I doubt that I can ever live without! Can't tell
you how many times it has saved my hull! |

| I have a Garmin 168, and it works very well. That is mounted on my big
boat. On my little boat I have a Garmin 240 mounted next to a Garmin 176. I think I like the seperate units a little better than a combined unit. I
just wish I had gotten a seperate GPS with a little larger display than the
176. The 176 is very nice for some things though. Itis fully portable. I
have a hardwired power cord on the boat, a cigarette lighter cord for use in
my truck, and it will run on batteries when I am fishing out of somebody
else's boat. When I take a road trip I set an external antenna on the dash
of my truck and use it for the road maps. It will even fit in a back pack
pocket when hiking, although its a little larger than a regular pocket size
GPS.
