Bass fishing and snakes
More like calling a scarlet king snake, a coral snake, but they don't
live in the same part of the world. like those two do. The Hog nose and
the "real" adders do resemble each other in appearance, but not in size,
nor toxicity, and since real adders don't live in the US, there is no
harm done. The real problem in wrong naming around here, is calling all water
snakes "water moccasins", I have seen countless hundreds of midland
water snakes killed because they were thought to be water moccasins,,
what is a water moccasin anyway ? Then they were identified as a copper
head after recovered, because of the pattern and color. My 27 year old daughter calls every snake she sees a "copper mouthed
rattle snake", she says that covers all the bases :-),. and she runs,
and screams. When your bass fishing, every snake in the water is not a cotton mouth,
or a water moccasin, to identify the cotton mouth, look for a dark line
running back from the eye, it is really the only good way to tell at a
distance, because their color to pattern varies, both with age and
location, I have seen some so dark no pattern could be easily seen.
Cotton mouths love to hang in low branches over the water, they can flop
onto fish this way, and they can flop fast,, be real careful retrieving
that tree hung lure as you bring your boat under these limbs. Unlike what they said in Harry Potter,, snakes "can't" hear, you can't
scream and make them leave your boat, oh yeah, it's not real bright to
"shoot" a snake that's in your boat, but I have seen boats after the
fact, it's also not a good idea to jump out of the boat, guess what's
going to be in the water with you real soon :-) |
