Aerial Photography

Does anybody know of a source for aerial photography that has more up to date imagery than Terra Server?

By the way, their free level of access is quite good. You should check them out. There is nothing like looking at aerial photography to give you a good feel for an area.

Most of the stuff from my area is from 1992. That is way too old. Along one valley there are new lakes that didn't exist in 1992, and along the main Colorado River valley some things change a little bit almost daily with noticable changes every year, and huge changes in flood level years. Now even more drastic is the extreme low water levels in many of the deep canyon reservoirs along the river.

I already looked at Terra Server's subscription service. It just gives you access to the highest resolution images. Its probably worth it in some areas just for the detail it gives. Their examples certainly look like it, but I really need newer images. Preferrably this year.

I made extensive use of terraserver when duck hunting this past winter. You would start to see patterns of how ducks flew on a given lake and then you could understand it based upon the aerial photo per the surrounding terrain. It helped to make better decisions on where to setup. I also liked it for fishing as I could somewhat see the shallow versus deep areas to give me an idea of which part of the lake to try. It takes a long time (at least for me), to explore a lake and the aerial shots helped me to decide where to try first.

All of these photos come from the USGS. They are satellite photos and are very resource intensive to take. It's my guess that unless the government sees a reason to take more photos of a certain area they won't. Also, it's very likely that more recent photos exist but they are not released until they get to be a certain age. Todd

Maybe Bob could post that he saw some WMD in the river valley he's interested in? That should get the birds overhead. Eric
