Fishing the Grass
One of the lakes here is just weed choked to the point that it will stop my
28 PT trolling motor dead and put up quite a struggle with the 46lb thrust
motor. Whats the best way to fish this stuff. The grass is right up to the
top of the water so fishing anything with an exposed hook is out.
I know the fish are there, I read once where anglers take oars and slice
lanes then fish them. Anyone do this? Any suggestions beside the 1/2 ounce
weights, These are not floating mats of grass they are all in an area thats
about 5-8 feet deep and contains 5-8 feet of weeds. It takes up a good
corner of the lake and I know when it's hot that's where the fish are going.
Looking at the color of the fish caught in the clearer water, these fish
spend a considerable amount of time in the grass. I would love to exploit
this lake some more but the floating worm, buzzbait and flukes are getting
me no where in this grass. HELP!!!!!!!!!!! Beside I want to give the other
two lakes a break. There must have been 6 boats out on them this weekend. :

| 7/8 jig that'll punch through? |

| Punching through isn't the issue. The grass grows straight up and is very
dense. it isn't the typical floating matts. there are pockets and there is
floating strands that grab everything by the nose. |

| I know some guys that rake holes in the weeds, then come back and fish them
later. I'd try something like a Lunker City Salad Spoon, Grass Rats, Scum
Frogs and similar lures. Can you send me a picture of the grass? If I see exactly what you're
dealing with, I might be able to offer more suggestions. |

| I have always loved fishing a snag-proof brand frog over these type of
spots. It's almost like a buzzbait hit, except the grass just explodes! I work mine alternating between quick and slow, usually stopping over any
thinner looking areas and just giving a little twitch. When working it over
the large mats, I usually have the rod tip pointed down and work it almost
like walking the dog on a zara spook.

| I would use some sort of floating frog type bait such as a Scum Frog, Boze
Frog, Snag Proof or Kanji. I have seen times when this bite will last all day. Brad Coovert

| Gil at Mesa Tackle sure makes a realistic frog. He hasn't been around here
for quite some time. |

| Most times it will, but you might need something with a larger profile. |
