Out on the canal bank again.... Crank Bait Rods...
It was awfully nice of the irrigation district to run this big canal right
through town so I could test tackle without having to run all the way out to
the river.Well, I dug a couple of medium light power / medium action rods out of my
retired stack. Spooled up with some 8lb flouro carbon, and a quick trip to
the canal bank revealed that I may be close on this. A 7-10' runner bouncing off the bottom didn't overwhelm the rod the way I
expected, and I was all over two smallmouth who made the mistake trying to
kill my bait. One was skin hooked on the outside of the mouth. It was
still landed with no troubles. The rod absorbed every shock. I think I may just have my new crank bait rod. Now to catch some bigger
fish on them and see how they work. I think I'll keep the one spooled up
with 8lb and spool the other with 12. That should give me a wider range of
working depths with fewer crank baits. Interesting stuff. They were cheap
rods too. I think I paid around $40 each for those. I'm not sure they are
perfect, but I have to load them up with some bigger fish before I'll be
able to say for sure. |
