Realistic Christmas Presents for Fishermen
Sure, I'ld like a new bass boat for Christmas, but realistically unless I
buy and finance it myself it isn't going to happen. So lets talk about
realistic presents we would like to receive from our families and close
friends.Often they take a certain amount of care to buy, find, or make presents that
take into account our needs or desires. I have to be honest though. I have
a small fortune in quality rods and reels, and a cheap Wally World combo
isn't likely to get used very often except when that person goes fishing
with me. The same goes for some of the boxes of misc tackle. Don't get me
wrong. I appreciate very much that my friends and family take into account
my passion. It shows they notice and care. That is worth more than
anything they could give me. So think about it. Realistically what would you like Santa to put under the
tree? For me I think a cool thing that would not be too expensive might be a
guided trip by a local (local in your area) professional angler. Not too
expensive, and it could create a memory that would last a lifetime.
Certainly the knowledge gained could be integrated into what I already know
and built upon to increase my skills and experiences for many years to come.
I'm not suggesting this to promote my friend Dave who is a professional
guide and my personal friend, but rather to get people thinking about
different ideas and get more in touch with those we care about and their
passions. My wife always asks me what I want for my birthday, Christmas, father's day,
etc. She is serious. She really wants to get stuff for me that I will use
and appreciate. When your close familiy members ask you it isn't because
they don't know you or care about your interests. It is because they hope
to more closely align themselves with something that will be truly used and
cared about by you.

| I think I'm at the point where I need nothing regarding fishing. I've honed
my skills & more importantly scaled down my arsenal. I no longer need more
than a few colors of any given baits, I own enough lures, rods, reels etc,
am happy with my boat, motors & electronics. The only fishing stuff I need
now concerns knowledge, and that's not something that someone else can give
me. I just hope & pray that there's a hundred presents under my tree for my
daughter... Happy Holidays All, Warren |

| Warren, did you read the two-part story on Skeet Reese on BassFan? He
attributes the success he's attained in part to simplifying his lures.
Here's an excerpt which I posted on another forum: After examining his temper and his tournament goals, Reese continued his era
of introspection and this time, he turned to his bait box. "When you do something long enough, you learn what works and what doesn't,"
he said. "I used to be the typical weekend-warrior bass fisherman who tried
to absorb every new lure and technique. I used to think, 'This crank has to
have this certain dot and this color on the back to get a bite. This jig
must have this many strands of a certain color to get a bite." But as he looked back over his successes, he realized he already knew how to
catch fish and sometimes, the baits got in his way. "Too many people get caught up in their baits, just like I did," he said.
"But then they get their butts kicked by somebody flipping a black-and-blue
jig or throwing a white spinnerbait with two willow-leaf blades. That's when
you realize the basics always work. That's when you realize it's not the
bait, it's the angler. "After I looked at it I understood that I already knew the techniques. And
each time I did well it was because I stuck with the gameplan - I used just
one or two baits that I'd used for years. I also realized that the industry
did a great job to get me to buy all this stuff. It got me excited to try
new things, which is a positive. There's a time and place for everything,
but for me, I had to simplify." He said that now he knows he needs just a few baits to be consistent. "In
practice I may have six or eight rods on the deck that are my confidence
baits. I'll have little variations for water color or forage, but I've
really simplified my tackle selection." |

| I know it's maybe a bit unimaginative, but I've always been partial to
Bass Pro Shops gift cards.
I can always buy what I want there and my wife and mother-in-law are
happy to oblige (and not have to dwell on what to get me). |

| Yea, my most successful Christmas gift getting has been when I take a
catalog, mark a few dozen items and give it to my wife. She is now on the
mailing list for a couple of fishing; boating and tool makers catalogs and
buyer lists. RichG |

| My kids give me gifts that they thnk I will like, and need. I know they
put alot of thought into what they buy...and no matter the utylity of
the gift, it is precious to me! My son John does the fishing stuff...and
always hits the target :). My other boys always get me things that they
know I usually put off buying for myself...a new wallet, etc., I am
blessed with the neatest kids a man could ever ask for (two of them are
adopted)...they are all my true gifts! I am truely blessed!

Santa Claus always delivers a new fishing license. Other stuff, I may buy
and give to the wife to give me. After 36 years of marriage things are
good. And wife gives me gifts to wrap. I am thinking a new Garmin map 76
to replace my old Garmin 45. The 45 is having screen problems. And since I
also fish the ocean, I want a submersible that can go in my ditch bag with
the portable VHF. |

| Awesome Marty, sorry it took so long for me to read your post. Skeet's the
man, and I agree 100% with his views on the subject. I'm very happy to have
read that, thanks for posting it. I have my go-to baits & it seems that I
can put fish in the boat everywhere I go with them (except Boom Lake, of
course). There are among a dozen or so baits that I find myself throwing
95% of the time. I should probably stick with them all the time, come to
think of it.
