ESPN/BASS Weekend Series Sign Up Question

I'm kind of ticked right now at BASS.

I just went online to register as a non-boater in the new ESPN Outdoors Bassmaster Series. I wanted to register for the Lake Champlain tournament on August 7, 2005, but it said that Bassmaster was only accepting registrations for the whole regional package, which is 5 tournaments.

I think the way they advertise it is very misleading. My last 3 issues of Bassmaster magazine has had double-page advertisements announcing this new series, but nowhere in that ad does it say you cannot register for single tournments and must register for the regional "package". I'm new to tournament fishing, and I contemplated for weeks about whether to try my hand in this series on my local lake and my wife finally convinced me to give it a try. Then, I find out that I can't even do that.

I was excited to see my local lake being part of the tournament series. But, I don't have the time or the money to travel to Maryland and 3 locations in New York. I only wanted to fish Lake Champlain.

Does anyone know why Bassmasters is forcing you to fish all 5 tournaments ?

They do that to try to fill all the events first. You should have a waiting list of individual events later. Pat

Exactly. The initial sign-up period is for those that want to fish the whole circuit. If, and I doubt there will be in your division, there are any openings after the initial period they'll be happy to let you sign up just for Champlain. Best of luck if you do!

Well - I guess that makes sense. But I kind of wish they'd let people choose just a single event. For the "weekend angler", it would seem to be that the ability to fish single tournaments would be more attractive to most people rather than making a 5 tournament committment with all that travel. They advertise this new series as requiring "no extensive travel" and "no serious time committments".

I don't think an 8-hour trip to Maryland, and a 5-hour and two 6-hour trips to New York qualify as "no serious travel or time committments". I'm not looking to develop my pro fishing abilities or looking to break into the pro circuit. I just want to fish a tournament of this caliber for fun. To me, this serious should allow that.

Oh well .... guess I'll stick with my local BASS Federation tourneys. I kind of wanted a taste of something a little bigger, just one shot at a time, is all.

You've got the right idea Shawn - the Federation tourneys are probably more fitting for your needs. I see the Weekend Series in the same light that you do - if I'm gonna take a 8-hour trip to Champlain, it will be for more than a 1-day tourney & a much better payout than this new series offers. go-bassn

I quit subscribing to B.A.S.S. a long time ago when they were pulling their "renew now scam". That's when you had just renewed four months earlier and were already getting "last chance" renewal letters.
