Best round reel.

Got a $30 off certificate from Cabelas. Have been thinking of a new casting reel. What suggestions for a round type? Thinking Calcutta 251. Bill

Sounds good to me, Bill. I got three of them and they are great.

A nice reel, I've had mine 9 -10 years now I guess with no problems at all. If you need a little more capacity for $30 more the Diawa Millionaires are also nice, with more bearings and a magnetic brake system, if you perfer them. sphipps1709

Man I don't know. Those old Abu Garcias are pretty bullet proof. I have been looking for an all metal one in a relatively small size myself.

I have 2 Abu 4601's. Got them for $40 ea at the Fred Hall show in Long Beach 2 years ago. I use them mostly for trout trolling on downriggers. I do like them for casting, but still not the best. First used them on Lake Fork and caught a few small fish on them. Guide had them on Falcon rods and throwing rattletraps mostly. Just looking for something a little different. Bill Calif

The Calcutta is a big improvement over any Abu I've ever fished with. sphipps1709

Calcutta is one fine reel. I don't know of anyone that has one and doesn't like it.

Shimano just came out recently with a new series of reels called the Corvalus. I managed to get my hands on one in the 400 series for muskies and it's a smooth feeling reel. I didn't get too much of a chance to use it before the water got hard, so I can't comment on it's durability, but if feels nice.

Well I ordered the Calcutta 251 today. Only thing that is bad about Cabelas, is the cost of shipping is based on sales price, not on weight or size. $30 off, did cover the shipping and some more. Now to figure if I need a new rod, or convert one of the existing bunch. Bill Calif
