HELP! - What Type of Rod?
I just bought a new Shimano Stradic 2500MgFA spinning reel. I would like to
hear suggestions for the best rod to pair with it. I am planning to fish for
largemouth bass with it mostly in lakes in NY State. I will also fish some
in Arizona lakes. I want as much versatility as possible because I am trying
to learn more about this type of fishing so I will be using everything from
rubber worms to spinners. I will likely use line from 8 - 12 lbs test. Next
year I will probably invest in a baitcasting rig.I would like to spend between $100 and $150 for the rod but will consider
spending more if I think it would give me the best rod possible. Thanks for the advice in advance. |

| I think that you would do well with a 6'6" to 7" medium rod with a fast to
extra fast action. Anyone that knows me knows that I am partial to St.
Croix blanks, so I'd say look at their Avid series if you're going to go
with a factory built rod in the price range you specify. I have a couple Stradics MgFA reels and paired them with rods that I built
using 7' St. Coix Legend Elite blanks. I am VERY pleased with them, using
them for 99% of my spin fishing. Lightweight and sensitive, they have
enough backbone to move a fish, yet are extremely sensitive. The Avid
series of rods is a good compromise between price and quality. |

| You might look at the St Croix AS68MXF rod. Works well with many light/
medium wt. line techniques. Don't think I'd put anything heavier than 10 lb
line on the reel unless it is a braid, due to lack of capacity and small
spool size. |
