Kinami Palm Tree Hook Problem

Ok, I have tried to maximize the hook ups with this bait as best I can. I use an over sized 5/0 Extra wide gap hook. It still blocks to much of the point section of the hook way to much. I lost a nice LM yesterday because of this. It only had about a 3/32nds of the hook point exposed when I got the bait back in the boat. The barb was not exposed at all. It wasn't a huge bass, but it would have made siz or seven places difference in our finish.

I have considered switching to a tube, and that would probably be ok for weighted applications like flipping trash, but it still won't solve weightless problems since the tube doesn't have the meat to flip weightless.

What type of rod and line are you using when throwing this lure? Big, thick, heavy bodies require a rod with a TON of backbone and a line with little stretch. If you only got 3/32nds of the hookpoint exposed, you're not moving that hook hard enough in my estimation. Beef up the rod, beef up the line and I don't think you'll have that problem. Steve

Also look into Zoom Horney Toad for fishing the slop, there's some of us in here that think they're awesome. Jerry

I'm thinking the same as Steve, You should be able to pull a sharp hook through any Kinami bait with the right rod/line/hookset. If you're flippin you needn't be line shy, I use 25# Big Game even in clear water. A heavy flippin stick & a manly hooset should get the job done. You should probably start texposing your hook while rigging too - I never bury my hookpoints in a plastic bait anymore...

Let me add on. I was throwing this on a St Croix flipping stick. I set the hook so hard it pulled the fish completely out of the water. Bob

If you were using a St. Croix flippin stick, with 50 lb. PowerPro, jerking the fish completely out of the water, I don't know what to say!

Bad JuJu maybe? P.O. any of the fishing gods lately?

If you jerked the fish from the water, it was a matter of resistance on the other end not being enough. Get bites from bigger fsih and the problem will go away. RichZ

That's just too funny. Actually when flipping I have jerked 3+ fish right out of the water on a shallow bite. This one was probably only about 2 though.

Still funny as heck.

Yes, but I'll bet there was enough resistance at the other end to penetrate with the hook before lifting the bass. RichZ

50# line can rip the face off a 2# bass lol...

Your problem is the line, try mono between 20-30# Bob.

He said that he only had 3/32nd hook point exposed. I don't think the problem is in the line. A hookset that can rip a 2 pound fish out of the water should also shred the soft plastic. I'd like to see how he's rigging the lure in the first place. Steve

Sounds like what was happening to me with the cyberflex plastics. I decided not to use them anymore unless rigged fully exposed. Those baits are tough! Henry

Bottom line is that alwaysfishing is the one that got us started with these things, so he's the one for the best answers. Come to think of it, he's been pretty quiet in here lately. Jerry

Texas rig them with a 4/0 and just throw them into the nastiest stuff. Bring them across the water like a topwater lure and get set. You can also use them like a Senko and let them slow drift down and then jerk them. Jerry

If you've got slop you'll ike the toad - fish it like a topwater buzzbait. Try pitchin Lunker City's Ozmo's in there too, it's awesome. go-bassn
