Correct Tip Top Size

I am building a blank up. I measured the tip top on the blank to be .075". Anyone know how to convert this measurement into a tip top size?

It is a fly rod that will be used for bass fishing. It's an old Gary Loomis 9' X 7 blank I picked up on eBay.

Hi Richard,

Rod tip guides are designated by the inside diameter of the tube that slides over the blank, in 64ths of an inch. I would guess that you need a #5 tip. It should slide on relatively easily, but if it's too loose, you can build up the blank with a layer of thread.

To calculate the tip size needed , mulitpy .075 X 64 =4.8 A tiptop of 5.0 might slip onto the rod tip but will not allow enough room for the adhesive. I would use a # 5.5 tip and use a two part epoxy as the adhesive. Even these adhesives can can be heated to remove a tiptop.Use an unbent paperclip to swap the inside of the tiptop with adhesive liberally. Slid the top onto the blank and wipe off the excess with denatured alcohol. Allow to dry 10 min. and yer done. David

Thanks Dave,

I rarely calculate tip size. I bought up a large inventory of various tips and so never calculate, I just go through the different tips until I find the right one that fits well.

I love this NG. Thanks everyone for your input. Since tips are only a few dollars I'll pick up a 5 and a 5.5 and use the one that works best. Rick Richard

I want to testify that Steve's system is very convenient when you break a tip rstorm453
