A while back there was a thread on reworking Jon boats and that several from the group had tried it.Would anyone care to provide me with a link to get me started. At onetime I had several links in my favorites list but virus's and a new PC seem to have misplaced them Thanks Ken Blevins

I did a quick and dirty setup with a Waco 2050-16. I had picked up a 50HP Force cheap for another project. It was perfect for my jon boat project. I have been meaning to take some pictures of it as I go. I have since pulled the Force 50 (still runs good) and installed a newer Merc 50. It runs a little faster, but mostly it holds faster with more load in the boat.

If you look at that boat on the aloha pontoons website they show it with two bench seats and a 15" transom, but you can order it with a 20" transom, steering console, and a solid floor instead of a middle bench seat. It makes a great platform to turn into a fishing boat. I have been fishing tournaments out of mibne for a year and a half. I keep meaning to deck it in, but its pretty decent to fish out of as I have it now. I added a rear deck by screwing an oak cleat (cabinet cleat not boat cleat) to the transom and laying a piece of exterior grade plywood across the rear bench and screwing it to my oak. Then I added a rear and a front pedestal seat.

One thing I reccomend for any fishing boat. Figure the most trolling motor you might need and then double it. I ran it with a 42? Evinrude trolling motor I pulled off another boat and it was pretty good, but when I put a new 65LB on it then it would handle anything. I can even pull the curent in the river when flipping the banks.

One of our Carolina Skiff owners posted this site http://www.redchaser.com/flatsboatonbudget.htm It doesn't matter if you choose to use a jon boat or a Carolina Skiff,.... many of the principles are the same. RichG TX RichG

That is good advice about the trolling motor. I have a 47lb motor in mine which seemed more than adequate per specs I read. It generally works just fine. Where it gets frustrating is with wind speeds in excess of 15 mph. I have to put it into high speed and you don't go very fast into the wind. That is where a 60lb+ motor may have been a better buy.

Nothing annoys me more than wind so I take the easy way out and find a shoreline protected from the wind. I may be missing out on some better fishing by taking the more comfortable way out.

Bass and Walleye magzine usually has good articles. Even though most of them are on high dollor rigs theyre are still good ideas. Kevin Kevin

We get a few hundred visits to ODF page on the SWL site every week, and as visitors ask questions about the project, we expand it from time to time. Otherwise, it's the same articles as you'll find at the ROFB site and on Outdoor Frontiers.

one caution i would offer about jonboats is that if your boat is on the narrow end of the scale, pay close attention to what you are doing to the center of gravity as you add materials, and if you figure to stand at a higher level when fishing. Jonboats have almost no secondary stability. Over the years, I've seen a number of boats flip over in a dramatic fashion, in large part due to way the load was carried. just a thought. bill allemann bill

how about added weight and the water level on the boat as it sits in the water. Seems to me there better be some good waterproofing and some floatation fill some place no ? Joshuall
