Hey, SUPER COLD! But I got one!!!

It was very cool! I just had it at work and had to take a few minutes to clear my head and calm down. So off I went, and as I drove over the bridge of the Huron River I noticed the water was clear of ice and was in fact streaming. Since I never fished this stretch of the river in Ann Arbor I was wondering where the warm water discharge was from.

I pulled off the road and walked back to the river with my spinning rod in hand with a Strike King bitsy bug and a #101 Uncle Josh black pork chunk. I flipped it in near one of the bridge pilings and stood there in my Dress Long coat freezing, shaking the rod more out of being cold than presentation technique. But within two minutes I felt a tap and I set the hook. I was actually quite surprised with how hard this fish fought in this -5° weather, as it forced me to back-reel. But fight it did. It ended up being a small 1-pound smallie. I was delighted, and COLD!!! So I released it and ran back to the car where I turned the heat on high and shook like a leaf for about 10-minutes before I felt comfortable enough to drive off.

FELT GREAT TO CAST A ROD AND EVEN BETTER TO CATCH A FISH!!! But I probably won't do that again, Toooo Cooooold!

WTG Craig!

Joe called me the other day teasing me about the warm water discharge at the steam plant... never mentioned anything about us going there, just teased me. Maybe I need to call him.

I've fished in sub freezing temps. Good cold weather gear can really make it a decent experience. No matter what keep your feet warm and dry. Bob

The coldest I've ever fished from a boat in was 17 degrees with a 25 mph wind from the north. The first lake I went to, I launched the boat through ice, but within 50 yards, had the Cobra stuck on top of the ice when it got so thick the boat wouldn't break through any more.

At that point, I had to put the boat back on the trailer and go find a different lake where the wind was beating at the landing and there was no ice.

We caught fish that day, but it was tough going and reels didn't last much more than an hour before they froze solid! I went through every reel in the boat before the guys called it a day.

I aint no sissy... lol.

I've fished with people that looked like popsicles when we were done. If you're catching, then you forget about the weather. That may be the other people problem... guess you can't get too excited by watching other people catch fish sometimes. LOL

Great advice, Bob.

And keep your jacket zipped up. The warmer you can keep your torso, the more "warm blood" your body can pump other places. Otherwise, the body is going to look after its organs first, and the limbs and digits will suffer. Oh, and cover your head, most body heat is lost out through the head.

If you get to where you can't stop shaking/shivering, seek warmth, it may be hypothermia setting in, and it can kill you. (Yes, I do brave the weather on occasion myself, and speak from some cold and hurting experience :-)

The warm water discharge around the power plants are always good fishin during the cold months. The Visteon plant in Ypsilanti (Ip si lan te') has always kept the water open and the walleye, crappie, white bass and accassional smallie biting. But the older I get the more I am becoming a fair weather fisherman. I can hang in the rain, but the cold is starting to get to me. It's not really the cold, its the wind, it just cut through me like a knife!!! GL3Loomis

Get yourself some good duck hunting gear. I stay comfortable when out in below 20 degree temperatures for much of the day where we get onto the water by 5:30am. I plan to switch back over to fishing as soon as duck season ends next weekend. You can bet I will be using my hunting gear for fishing to stay warm. Not sure what to do though about reels freezing up though. Just take as many as you have.
